When did NGC start the FS designation?

I sent in my 45-p registry set jefferson for an appearance review because of some spots on it and the word is it is coming back FS! I always thought it was and have some other ones that are probably FS but are older slabs like this one, I am thinking that if they didn't start it until after mine were slabbed its worth sending in for a review. Most were slabbed in the early 90's. I asked the CS rep but she didn't seem to have an answer in her email for that.

I actually need to know the same information and don't. I have several that I think might make 5FS. Is your 1945-P an MS67? That would be quite a point boost if it was!

Yes indeedy! All my war nickels are 67 in the registry set. I am I think #25 now so I should probably be in the single digits after I add that cert#! I may catch you guys one day!

To be honest I can't recall when they started it. Should be easy enough to ask 'em over on the NGC forum though.

Oh great, another forum to register for! ha oh well I guess I can use them for something else, Ill post up what they say. There was a thread where they said that originally they only designated FS when there were 6 steps. So you may have a 5 step FS not designated.

Hey now, don't even think of knocking me out of the top 10. What is your set name and do you have photos? It kills me that everyone has these great coins and won't share photos with their registry sets. I can't even imagine what the Bressler set looks like; it must be awesome.

Ha! Ill do what I can, the set is "my67warnickels" Im tied in 25th right now. I dont have pics but I plan on it when I get the 45 back and if any of the others will hit, I think I have a couple of 5 steppers that didn't get FS back then because they weren't 6 steps. No update on the NGC forum, I guess they only update about once a day or so.

If you get too close, I will have to send my 1942-S and 1944-D to NGC for star designation review (400+ points). Can't wait to see your photos, you know I love Jeffersons.

SHoot, if you think they will hit you should send them in anyways. I really like your set I looked at it a long time ago before I joined here. I wish that had sections for varieties, have you seen my au-58 42d/horizontal d? I would sure like to put that in but it is ANACS, they did alot more variety attributions than NGC.

I probably should, but I am just too lazy. Once I acquire the 1943/2-P and the set is complete and I have no way to improve other than upgrading I might send them in.

The 1942-S deserves a star and I have absolutely no idea what the NGC graders were thinking when they didn't give it a star. The reverse only warrants the star, but considering both the obverse and reverse toning, it is mindblowing.

The 1944-D is an Appalachian and is a no brainer. This coin is 100% going to get a star. It is in an old holder with the rare "T" designation prior to both the star designation and the 5FS designation. Honestly, it has a shot at the 5FS as well.

I wish they would include the 1942-P War Nickel proof in the registry set, mine is a CAMEO.

Thanks, but before that they designated FS which was only 6 steps, I was wondering when they originally started the FS designation.

The Appalachian Hoard was group of fantastically rainbow toned Jefferson War Nickels discovered by a dealer in an estate near the Appalachian Mountains in late 2000. This dealer had the hoard certified by NGC and then the coins were distributed (sold) by different dealer who was a toning specialist. There was skepticism from the collecting community from the start, and when the coins sold out and a second batch of Appalachians (including both war nickels and regular issues) magically & immediately appeared after the first group sold, the skepticism turned widespread. The toning dealer at this point dropped his affiliation with them and NGC stopped encapsulating coins of that color scheme and pattern as market acceptable.

Most of the numismatic community considers the Appalachian Hoard to be the work of a talented coin doctor and basically relegated the coins to AT status. However, the coins are all graded by NGC and are phenomenally beautiful. They also still bring ridiculous premiums despite their AT stigma. The fact that I own 5 of these coins is proof of my tolerance towards AT coins.

Here is an example of an Appalachian Jefferson currently for sale by a very reputable dealer for a ridiculous price. Even I won't pay that price. I have a feeling he doesn't really want to sell it.

Hope you get your camera soon my friend.

Wow! I never knew that story, but I never got into toning, you learn something new all the time! BTW still now answer on the NGC board. THey moderate the posts and haven't posted it yet. I looked at my coins again and it looks like my 43d 44d and 45d should go FS if I send them in for review. That doesn't add alot of points for them but it helps.
