I don't care how soft the cloth is or what it is made of - if you rub a coin with it, you will scratch or hairline the coin.

Some people think because cloth is softer than metal it can't scratch a coins surface , but don't forget about the tiny particles of dust and dirt or even bits of the corrosion of the coin itself that the cloth moves that scratches or hairlines a coin .

It has nothing to do with being softer or harder. Cloth of any kind is abrasive, and it will mark the surface of a coin.

The proof of this is that a coin can be polished with any cloth.

So just the friction between the two causes the hairlines ? Never thought of it that way , makes sense though , Thanks .:D

Wren, you opened my eyes to a new cleaning possibility for coins with this thread so I went out to cost-co today with about 20$ and bought a five gallon drum of javex and a large vat of sulfuric cleaner. On the way to the cash I found something to brush all the crud off my coins that I did not think off before seeing the sale…. Brill pads 50 for 5$... needless to say my coins are looking better then ever…

And the coins could catch a cold or even the flu.

You'll get a lot of negative statements about that but some individuals saliva is extreamely acidic. In some instances it will clean a coin a lot more than wanted. So now who do you hand those to?

In many instances canned air is exactly what it states. There is usually nothing on the can stating humidity free. contaminate free, dirt free, etc. It is in most instances just canned air.

I once found a proof coin with a little haze on it. I really, really carefully tried to wipe it with a soft cotton ball. GDJMSP is right. Even that left line marks.

But it's gotta be better than just blowing on them , that probably causes more carbon spots than anything .JMO:D

Tell that to Doug , there's no way a magic clothe can harm a coin , heck they can turn even a dirty comman coin into a MS-70 Gold Stella :eek:heck thet are Magic , cmon Doug argue with that logic .
