As we all agree, it's nice to be-friend some bank tellers. Is there a point that it can bite you in the rear later? Possibly. Went to get some Lincoln boxes yesterday and one of my "friendlys" said "good afternoon Mark, could you look at these please?" Low and behold she pulled out 4 GORGEOUS Peace dollars. An elderly lady had brought them in to deposit. Well a huge grin came across my face and at the same time a bigger grin came across the tellers face. I told her it was a great find, espically for a buck a piece. I didn't make any offers...YET but gonna take her some holders for her coins today. So the question is can you be too friendly or let your tellers know too much about coins? My opinion is no but curious as to some other outlooks.
Plus I'm now trying to get a job at the bank.:goofer::goofer:

Not only is your Teller helping you, but when you exchange those silver coins for non silver coins or paper currency, you are helping the teller:

She/he has to fill out special forms to document any and all silver coins still in their till at work's end. When you exchabge those silver coins, there are none to document. The teller can leave right after the till's tally is balanced for the day!

uif she has an idea as to what they are worth, and you only offer a buck..she might look elsewhere. Its great to look for bargains... but a steal is sometimes too good to last.

Fishaddict, tough luck on those big fish <pun> that got away. ;) If you ask me, though, I think you're adjusting well to the situation, by helping this teller. I'd just continue to help her and stick to boxes out of that bank. You have to make adjustments along the way in this game, though, right? Good adjustment.

Personally I would of never EVER EVER grined because you let her know it was worth something :D I would of offered her 6 bucks each and she would of thought she made millions and you walk away with some killer booty at a reasonable price :D

My wife is a teller at a bank. I'll have to give her a deads-up on what to keep an eye out for. I bet I can get peace dollars for face value... and maybe a back rub.

Sounds sexy , i'm sure the back rub would be nice too.

The back rub is better bribery than money. Good thing, because I lack the second one due to my numismatic addiction.

I was under the impression that bank tellers were called silver witches.

I am having that problem too... I think my teller friends are now on the out look for anything strange... And they don't even give me first pick when they find something good... They just show it to me and say they are going to E-bay it....

I'll get my revenge when I take back in all those bags of Kennedy halfs and cents... :kewl:

Nope - I think you did right. It never hurts to be friendly. As it is the credit union I use the tellers are very honest - anything interesting goes to one of the tellers husbands. Plus they do not order halves or boxes for customers - again okay with me. Still they are friendlier than any other bank I have ever bank I have used.

I worked at a bank for a year and I never had to do that. I would always buy the coins myself...but we never had any kind of form to fill out for this sort of thing.

Obviously your banks haven't been purchased by Bank of America YET. By me banks I've been going to for years, 5 different ones, have all been bought by them. Rules, rules, rules. Now have to sign in and wait for someone to be available to get into safe deposit boxes. Now have to show ID to get into safe deposit boxes. And that is to people that have known me for years. Any transaction at a tellers window for taking out money requires you to show an ID with a photo on it. Even if it the teller is your wife since the monitors are watching she best do as the rules say. No teller is allowed to collect and/or put aside any monitary items. Even if your her husband and she attempts to slip you something, she could be dismissed.
I used to be able to get half dollars at all of them. Now told half dollars are not allowed. Can't order them, get them, deposit them. If attempting to deposit them, they will be sent out for counting and there is a charge for that.

Thanks all for the inputs. I agree Eddie, I think being nice will pay off in the long run. I told her that they were roughly $12-20 each. She was very happy and that's O.K. with me. They already go above and beyond by keeping their empty Cent boxes for me. They are supposed to break them down and shred once they open them. Even the bank manager puts them away for me.

OK, I'll ask the obvious question. Carl, customers have choices, too. Why do you choose to still bank at a bank with that kind of customer service?

Is this a riot! I save those cent boxes, too--I love them! :)

I'm using them for a roll set. Of course I don't think I need 40+ boxes but they look nice. I may just fill as many boxes as possible and build me a small house:goofer::goofer: I'll use my dime boxes for furniture.

I'd guess most women would tell you they'd be getting the better end of the deal there.

As I mentioned almost all banks in my area have been purchased by either Bank of America or Chase. I have accounts in 5 banks. Unfortuately all, except one so far, have been purchased by Bank of America. The other is a, for now, independant. Only one has a coin counter and they said when it stops working, out it goes. Chase told me no safe deposit boxes unless you open an account with a certain minimum.
I suppose I could search for banks that are more customer friendly, but would probabaly have to drive 500 miles to get there.
One, and only one, of the reasons for some of these problems is the short rolls people are doing. They take a bunch of rolled coins to a bank assuming they will not be opened. They are each short one coin.
Some customers ask for special coins. With a lack of tellers, one teller must lock up everything, go to a vault, acquire the special request, back to thier station, reopen everything. Meanwhile a pile of customers in line are about to complain to the officers at desk about special request holding up everything.
According to one bank tellers that put items aside usually come up short at the end of thier time so that too is being stopped.
I suspect many of us are creating the problems banks are faced with. I don't like it but I see thier points.
