I'll just say this. Some of us are collectors and hobbyists here. Some are investors and speculators. Others are dealers. To almost everyone, paying a large premium for a full roll of anything seems ludicrous. However, because most of you are not in the niche, the fact that there are true roll collectors out there seems to be missed. A roll collector will pay a premium (even an absurdly large premium) for a roll that may very well be elusive for some time. Many banks are outright refusing to order bags of the new cents (and they ARE available) even when hundreds or thousands of customers are inquiring about it. Glacier Bancorp (one of the larger holding companies here in the west) refuses to allow their banks to order these cents. It will take quite a bit of searching to find even one new 2009 cent at the moment, let alone a whole roll. It may be hard to understand why someone would go crazy over "modern c**p", but it's a definite niche. Collectors have their own reasons for what they do. When somebody spends multi-thousand$$$ into a barely recognizable dirty old coin, it is beyond most people. Yet, some are in that kind of niche. If I were a roll collector, I would probably pay quite a premium to be able to be one of the first to have a new 2009 cent roll. As a hoarder, I wouldn't pay more than face. As a variety hunter, I would pay a short premium in hopes of finding varieties, errors, and being able to record die pairs at an early state. Yes, there may be billions upon billions of these minted, but how long will it take for any significant number of these to begin to mix into circulated rolls (let alone collector's hands) other than mint sets when they are finally released (at a premium may I add). It is even years later now that we are still only beginning to find more varieties and errors from 2006 cents. There's a lot more to numismatics than just collecting more old coins than we do old dust. And future value really has no bearing on collecting in and of itself. There is quite a plethora of information to gather and collect from coinage, and at certain times and situations, and to certain people, premiums (even for "modern c**p") is quite worth it.
I must be WAAAAY ahead of my time, because I already collect these things! This just goes to show you, though, that there are always niches for the hobbyist, although to others it may seem a little ridiculous to collect such things.
FYI. According to the US Mint Web-site under Product Schedule the "Lincoln Cent Birthplace Roll Set" is going to be available on March 13, 2009.
funny i say please all the time but i still havent seen the 2 mohurs. maybe my guardian angel is sleeping. GD can you wake them up?
can you believe it?. the general circulation 97.5% zinc cent is selling at $8.95 per two rolls at the u.s mint. plus $4.95 shipping. total cost $13.90 for $1.00 cost. see how mint is killing us. don't buy this one.
You know I think the mint left some good money on the table. They(the mint) should have come out with these two Lincoln cent rolls on Feb. 12Th when they introduced the Lincoln stuff. Now the few people and EBay sellers who were able to get these coins on the 12Th were/are able to sell them at a premium.
why mint not using the 95% copper cent for the two rolls sets?. why use 97.5% zinc cent instead and sell at a very high premium?. $8.95 for two rolls plus $4.95 shipping. total cost is $13.90 or a cent cost $0.139 each. or 1,290% premium.
I can see it now. Soak the cllectors for $8.95 per two roll set all year and then in late November after getting all that money for zinc ans sales have dropped off (and the 7 day return has expired), then offer two roll sets of Bronze at some even higher figure and soak them all again. (And of course these wouldn't be satin finish so you would have to have these too so you have all 28 composition/finish combinations) Aren't you guys glad I'm not in charge of Mint marketing?
with alot of people moaning last year of not getting any 2008's - does anyone think they are going to get any 2009's this year. the chances are even slimmer. plus with the economy, ive heard many stories that the Fed Res is overloaded with coins being returned. My local bank usually gets new quarters and pennies this time of year. Ive been told they cant get any more new ones. Ive tried the last couple years of getting new nickel rolls without any luck. another plus is the low mintage on the US mints web site. Im in NY state in the Philadelphia range so that mintage is even lower than the Denver mintage so far on the total mintage. i think ill order a set just because of the low mintage so far, and the odds of finding one i think is slim. i know the price is high and will cost 8 cents over face. ( i know, i'm gonna order more stuff from the mint anyways so the shipping charge is usually absorbed thru the other items i purchase and save anyways. Snowman
