I posted this one a few weeks ago in world coins, and got maybe two people to see it, no one to comment, so I'll try this old thread. I recently bought this cheaply because it looks to be in sad shape. It's been harshly cleaned and still has some hard green areas, but I bought it because I found the strike interesting. It appears to me it was struck once, rotated 90 degrees, then struck again but with a new blank covering the reverse die. On the obverse the VIIII and date of the first strike are clear, with bare traces of the bust. The portrait of Louis is plain from the second strike, as is the L.VIIII, but the date is barely readable. Most of the other legend is obscured from both strikes. On the reverse, most of the first strike is there, but it has been flattened in places by the second strike, presumably against a blank. The coin is about half thickness of a normal liard, barely over half the weight (2.44g vs about 4.5g normally), and a little wider than normal. The edge is rough, as if someone tried to remove metal to bring its width into tolerances. I was wondering, how common is this kind of error with these liards?

I just now bought this very cool/scarce 1969 Canadian off-center/broad strike quarter. CCCS Graded Canadian AU-58. You hardly ever see these. I pounced on it for $74.00. Says $90.00 in Canadian dollars. I do realize it can be called a un-centered broad strike. I do like how far it is off-center. What percentage do you think it is off-center ? 10-15% ???

I sent the coin off to NGC for verification and weirdly it came back encapsulated only as XF ?

 

XF is about right for the condition.

Hi yeh XF was better than I expected but I was more confused by the fact that they didn’t recognise or make any mention of the die clash as an error ? Is it not an error

 

I think TPGs only list "errors" if requested.

Actually, Canadian presses are a bit different. That coin is not broadstruck, as there is a partial collar to it. Canadian presses have very stiff collar dies, which produce results like your 25c coins, as well as other errors, including the lovely "ball cap" off-centre error to a point where the collars can literally shear the coins into elliptical (or football) planchets.

I would classify your coin as struck off-centre with a partial stiff collar.

 

To illustrate my point above (using Canadian coins):

This is a coin struck off-centre, with a stiff collar (ball cap). You can see where the collar die is pressed into the planchet that is resting on the anvil die, as the coin sits off centre on top of the collar (look on the obverse).



Now, this is when the collar die is not engaged at all, an off-centre broadstrike. The coin sits completely flat, with no ball cap or lip on the reverse.

 

Here is an extreme example of a stiff collar off-centre, almost to the point where the coin was sheared in two.

 

I paid it and requested the coin was checked/verified as an error but maybe a die clash isnt an error ? its a minefield
