But the pages in those albums don't smell like shower curtains. And neither do the PVC containing binder pages that I have.

My side is still hurting after that one. Sure wonder who you were talking to. Of course they too may be laughing at us for trying to talk to them in English.

Not sure where that comes from. I've also contacted a manufacturer of my shower curtains about this. They actually laughed at me. At first thought I was kidding but eventually told me to just read the lables.
I walked the aisle of Walmart some years ago trying to smell shower curtains and noticed how many people were looking at me as if they were about to call the people in the white coats.
For one thing I do not have shower curtains that smell like anything.

I don't know what to tell you guys except this -- my old 2x2 pages that have PVC smell like shower curtains, my old flips that have PVC smell like shower curtains, and everything I've read is that if you smell something plastic that's soft, and it smells like shower curtains, then it has PVC. Now the ?converse? may not be true -- there are some things that have PVC that don't smell like shower curtains, or at least I've been told there are. And I suspect that thee are now PVC-free shower curtains....but that doesn't change my experience as well as what I've read/been told by multiple sources about likening shower-curtain smell to PVC.

Confused about the whole PVC thing now....Mike

Mike that is what I was told so many years ago that I can't even remember how long ago it was. It is also what I tell everyone.

Tell ya what though gang, you go to Walmart, Target, Kmart take your pick. Look at the cheap shower curtains, pick one up and smell it. The smell is very distinctive. Then buy a new box of the soft coin flips - open it and smell it. It will smell just like the shower curtain did. Simple as that.

I really hate to argue with you Doug, but if a certain company is advertising coin pages as vinyl, and I get them, and they have no smell like a shower curtain..then I still think that they are vinyl and bad for my coins, as the company says they are vinyl.

Not all vinyl has PVC in it stainless. I am merely saying if coin flips or coin pages do smell like a new shower curtain - then you should not use them.

If you get some that don't smell like a new shower curtain, then perhaps more research is necessary to find out if they have PVC or not.

Did anyone call again today or did this thread just turn into “stuff I found that smell like shower curtains” ?

I would really like to know since I was planning on buying one of these but since this thread I have put my binder buying money aside and still waiting on someone to call them up and find an English speaking rep to assure us that there is or is not PVC or as I like to call it “essence of shower curtain” in the pages…

I got through to Dansco and got an English speaking man named Steve.

He said they (dansco 7000 pages) DO contain PVC. He says that the reason they are not arhival safe for those is because they have to be soft, and you are supposed to use PVC free flips.:rolling:.

This is strait from a dansco rep. too.

well, that was a waste of money...anyone got any ideas on how to store ancients?

    Here's what I did....

Get an archival-safe 3 ring binder (available from a number of sources, here's the one I use: http://www.google.com/products?clie...a=X&oi=product_result_group&resnum=1&ct=title )

Get some PVC-free 2x2 pages (also available from a number of sources, here's the one I use: http://www.brent-krueger.com/vinylpages.html )

    Hope this helps...Mike

p.s. don't tell anyone, but I have a collection of coins that have been in 2x2s in 2x2 pages that have PVC in them, and after almost 30 years, they haven't developed any problems. My sense is that PVC needs to be in direct contact with the coins, based on that experience.

What the difference between a archival-safe binder and a ordinary binder ?

Sulfur in the paper (or lack thereof).
