I have been working on my collection of wheat cents. I got hooked when I purchased a roll of wheats on eBay and found a 1909 vdb in my first roll! I still need about 34 to complet my collection. I don't plan on ever getting a 1909s vdb unless I happen to find one in a roll that I am searching (not likely). What should I do to find the rest? Should I: 1. Bite the bullet and purchase the ones I need from a dealer or eBay. 2. Keep searching rolls of wheat pennies because I enjoy the thrill of the hunt. 3. Just buy boxes of cents from the bank and search through those (patience grasshopper). Any other suggestions? Thanks, Sean
Roll's from the bank are a cheaper way. Unsearched rolls and bags are usually a gimmick. A raw 1909 VDB in the VF range usually can be purchased for less than $15.00, One in the CH-AU range can be purchased in the $60.00 range. If you need raw key-dates or semi-key-dates use a reputable dealer and stay away from e-bay on those.
If you look up on this page you will see a banner that says mesacoin.com Go there and Jack will most likely be willing to help ya out.
It really depends which 34 wheats that you need. If they are all earlier dates then you'll be a while finding them in rolls. If you're new to collecting I wouldnt suggest Ebay, but, I really dont know your experience. I will also suggest MesaCoin.com. Jack is a great guy and very helpful. He also has a few nice 09-S VDBs..
No, that is a really rusty 1943. The rust is so bad that the letters and number are actually depressed into the coin instead of raised!
I agree. However, I have found a few sellers who have truly unsearched rolls and quality raw cents. Overall, I think I have come out ahead (just barely).
