I know this might not go down well with our commonwealth friends, but most of the time I do not ever collect their coins because they are one sided. Up until Victoria I find the obverses pleasant if not great. However, I cannot stand to see her face ever again its so unpleasant. Does it HAVE to be on your coins? I know our circulation coins suck, but at least our other coins do not have to be one sided coins.
If I won it in a raffle, I would sell it and buy this instead/ AV 30 Dukaten (1741) Basel. Its my fav. coin that I cannot afford.
That 1605 Jahangir AV 1000 Mohurs (35 pounds) was largest ever gold coin. It was cast from a form. Maybe same for the Canadian one.
I have read these large gold pieces are all cast. Casting a coin can produce excellent coins. Look at Japanese cast coins, many are exquisite workmanship, in many ways superior to struck.

I can't even equate that with the word "coin". It was never intended to be spent & it's not a trial or a pattern. It's just a big, expensive shiny thing.
I mean, it's always nice to weigh down your safe so that thieves can't carry it without breaking their back. But there are more sightly (& afffordable) bricks available!

Lots of 19th century British Commonwealth stuff is pretty bland - denomination, country and some beads mostly.
