My answer in another thread brought this question to my mind. When did my collection of coins and coin related stuff become an accumulation? It's out grown my safe and a 32 gallon tub. Everything from rolls of uncirculated coin, bags of foreign coins, elongated cents, bank bags, banks, coin trays, and even some bank notes and stamps thrown in. There are coins in 2x2's, flips, folders, books and binders, slabs, cointainers, and zip lock bags. I might need an intervention or another room to store it all in. I do have several sets (Franklins, 7070 type, Roosies) that I'm working on and silver that I collect as rounds and bars that I stack against the zombie apocalypses. Does anyone else have this problem? Hi, My name is beaver96 and I'm numisaholic.
I would have to say I am as well. I am not just a hoarder for hoarding sakes, since I do think I am also a numismatist and know about coins more than the average bear. But...I cannot resist coins. Even young, buying a group of buffalo nickels with a lot of 1936 dates didn't bother me at all. I was never a hole filler. Yes, if it is important to me, I want different type of coins, but to have to buy a 1913d nickel because it had a flat field instead of rounded, or even buy a 1913 d dime because it was "different" than a 1913 one, I never gave a crud. That is part of the reason I moved into ancients. Tens of thousands of type different, not different control marks, dates, etc. Still, I buy group lots of 50 coins at a shot when they are good deals.
I feel your pain. Three years ago I added a second safe... A year ago I added a third safe. Started talking about another and the wife put the brakes on it. So I bought one for my office!...... I figured once I gave up trying to be organized, that was when mine became a hoard rather than a collection. It's just there's so many cool coins out there!..... Hi, I am Randy and I too am a numisaholic.
Not me! I HAVEN'T GOT A PROBLEM!!! I CAN STOP ANY TIME I WANT!!!!! [Narrator - he did have a problem and he could not stop] Meh, I don't have much else going on. I like my job but one of the reasons I like it, is it's low stress (and I work remotely), my kids are out of the nest, I'm divorced with a dog. I need stuff to keep me entertained!
If it's round and made out of metal and has a date or saying or in inscription I WANT IT no problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The question isn't, "Why did you buy that coin?" the question is, "Why didn't you buy more of those coins?!?!" We're a murder of crows, looking for shiny objects and putting them in our nests.
That might be the key sir. When you give up trying to organize it, keep track of it, know everything you own, etc might be when you pass the line from collector to hoarder. Probably at least half of the coins I own I have no idea. I have told this story before, but a few years ago I was at a shop and saw a nice AU pillar dollar. I thought to myself, "I have always wanted a nice pillar dollar" so bought it. When I went to put it away in the SDB I found 4 other nice ones. So, at least 5 times in my life I have thought "I have always wanted a nice pillar dollar". Ancients forget about it. Heck, I dug up some coins I bought maybe a year and a half ago to put in SDB and have absolutely no clue when or where I bought them.
It's all the same to me regardless of the name. I hoard coins. I accumulate coins. I store coins. That makes me a collector of coin. Hoarding sounds like you're out of control. Accumulate sounds like you get them and keep them regardless. Storing them, well that reinforces the first to names. That's why I'm a coin collector and no one can tell me differently.
I've got every wheat penny and silver coin I've ever received in change. When I complete a set, and upgrade a piece or two, I save the old ones to start a "B-team" I've got rolls of pre-1960 Jefferson's taken from circulation. I have 2 rolls of bicentennial quarters taken from circulation (I've only recently begun catch and release for bicentennials) I could go on but, yeah, I'm a hoarder.
As a kid, my LCS had to clean their glass cases after each of my visits. In 2005, I was settling my Father's estate and "discovered" eBay. I couldn't believe how cheap Unc rolls were. At the time, Unc. dime rolls from the 50's could be had for less than $30/roll. Quarters and Halves went for about $65/roll. Buying coins sort of eased the pain of my Father's passing, and I told myself that I really wasn't spending money, so I just kept buying and buying. The idea was to hoard now and search/sell in retirement. I'm retired now and still can't stop buying. It's truly a mental disorder.
Hmmm…I’m the odd man out in this thread. I’ve been collecting coins almost 50 years (since I was 8 years old), but I’ve never been the hoarder type — in fact, I’m averse to clutter and excess in any form (shrinks probably have a term for that ). Several years ago when my collection was approaching a thousand pieces, I tapped the brakes and started asking myself why I owned all of the coins I owned. In many cases I didn’t have a good answer, and so I started paring them down. Today I have a much smaller collection of around 250 coins, but they’re quality coins I feel some connection to and passion for, not just pieces of metal taking up space. Full disclosure: I don’t collect date sets, and I’ve never bought a roll of anything, so that makes it easier to keep the collection small.
LOL. Wow, you so eloquently nailed it. I've got mine stored in everything you named, plus, cigar boxes, shoe boxes, coffee cans, ornamental collector tins, bank rolls, customer wrapped rolls, 5 gallon water cooler jugs, and I'm sure more that I've forgotten. Good thread @beaver96
