If you had to pick one US coin you own

I had my guy looking for years for me. I about fell over when he showed me this one at a VERY affordable price point. He found it on a wholesale dealers exchange. The kind of place they don’t let folks like me and you look at!

My current favorite was just given to me as a Christmas present by my son in law who has started stacking and collecting on his own.

 

I had one of those (a 1795 Flowing Hair Dollar) that I somehow managed to buy around 1973. And mysteriously disappeared in the mid '80's. Along with my 35mm camera. Somehow things "mysteriously disappeared" when I was married to my gold-digging ex-wife........

 

I'll pick one of mine--a 1916 McKinley gold $1; graded MS64+. I bought it back in the late '70's & a few years ago submitted it to PCGS.

 

Here's my best Bust half.

 

I collect errors and have a half a dozen or so "favorites". For some reason, I have a special place for this ugly guy.

 

OK, I see the DDR. What's up with all the specs on the OBV and some on the reverse as well. Deteriorated die state? Or something else. I'm not that good on cents and dimes, eyes aren't as good as they were once. Thx

 

Half way thru 1982 the mint went to Copper plated zinc planchets. Instead of the previous copper/brass solid planchets.
What you see are plating blisters, they were very common on these planchets.

 

How about the 1879-S, reverse of '78? (I have.)

It would have to be my well used 1859-S double eagle. Not a rare coin by any means but alot scarcer than the common type three. Graded by pcgs as a vf30.

 

This led me to a serendipitous discovery. I was curious what grade your half was given so I looked it up on the PCGS website. I decided to look mine up while I was there, and found that a previous owner got the TrueView photography on it.

Always nice to get a little freebie.

 

Indeed, it is one of the very best circulating designs according to many numismatic design experts, along with the Augustus St Gauden Dbl-eagle, the Geo Morgan $1, and the Adolph Weinman Walking Liberty 50c. But what really counts is that it's YOUR favorite...!

 

Cool story...I, too, recall those 50's days of collecting, when as a boy also with a paper route I would go to the bank constantly and exchange rolls (usually one at a time) plus filling in with my money to replace out-takes, to see what new discoveries I could find. My best find back then was an 1878-S DMPL-Cam Morgan $1...rolls (and pockets) were ripe with Morgans, Peace, Indians/Buffalos, occasional Liberty 5c and 25c, etc. "Oh, those were the days, my friend...we thought they'd never end..." !

 

My favorite coin is the first Large Cent I ever purchased. I have collected coins my whole life, but mostly the small stuff (Wheats, Mercs and such). I had always LOVED the Large Cents ever since I first opened a coin magazine.

Purchased this from Tom Deck at LargeCents. I communicated with him directly for awhile. He's a great guy.

It's a 1798 S-169 Large Cent. It was rated an R3 at the time of purchase. Not crazy scarce or valuable, but it's the first Largie I ever purchased. It was like a dream come true.

As for me, I don't use/want a smartphone nor do I have any photo equipment, photo skills or tech savvy beyond simple basics (and I mean "simple") that would allow me to take/post any quality photos of any of my coins...also the reason I can't grade or sell them (most are raw and consignment fees are prohibitive) on my retirement budget. Still, since boyhood I've always loved the Morgan dollars and since I have several hundred high-grade examples, that's my favorite coin...if barely more than my Peace $1s, Walking Liberty 50c, and...oh, yes...a number of other US, British, Canadian and Eastern European silver from the 19th and early 20th century. As others have said...after a lifetime of avid/amateur collecting, it's truly hard to choose just one.

 

I don't have a single favorite coin. I have about a half dozen that at any given day one of them would be the one I'd pick up first...

 

Just saw this, but you appear to have a pretty serious DDR right there!

 

What were bar tokens used for?

Was it like one token = one drink?
