Hello Tholath, I also have an Indian coin that I would like to know more about. I hope that you don't mind my posting it here with yours. Maybe we can both get some answers from the experts at CT. Mine was given to me by a fellow traveler on an airplane. He noticed that I was reading a coin collecting magazine & after some discussions he gave me this coin from his briefcase. It is made of silver & less than 2 cm diameter. Very best regards, collect89
old coins Hi Thanks fo the company Still waiting for some expert comments on the coin.... I am trying to find out from some sources here in India also. I have some more similar coins with me (like the one I posted above) - yet to identify. All are being scanned and about to be posted at my website. Regards Thomas
thx for sharing tholath, nice pics, wonder where u get these in Bbay , mind sharing the source? wonderful pic collect89
Thomas, I cant attribute the coin without going through dozens of books and i am in the middle of a massive project so i wil wait but it looks to be one of the old copper pieces nothing too expensive that you see at tourist places all the time. Collect 89, yours looks like a silver rupee from the islamic area, those are usually about 15-20 i will try and attribute it if someone else doesnt get it to it first
Some of those older coins can be extremely hard to identify, especially if they have significant wear. I have Krause catalogs going all the way back to the 1600's, but they are notorious for having bad pictures and not speaking (or reading) any of the native languages doesn't help either. I'm not so much into the Princely States coinage, so I can't really help you there, but like Spock said, that East India Coin looks a bit dubious. Seems like an awful lot of wear on that coin and you can't even make out the emblem with the two lions on the reverse. Sorry I couldn't be of more help!
about the probable east india coin Hi There is a lot of verdigris on the coin - going to give the olive oil treatment and see if it can be cleaned. Meanwhile on inspection there seems to be a faint 1718 inscription. 1 and 7 very faint - next 1 and 8 readable - with a 20X illuminated loupe. The coin is also thick - about 3mm. One other coin I have (attached) has similar image - year 1794 - but is very thin - about 1mm. And also wondering what is the technique for taking magnified images.... Thomas
you have hit the nail on the head. some of these so called experts on indian coins cant count to 10 let alone grade furthermore they think KM is the holy bible while it is nothing but a half baked publication on indian coins. Even in KM half the languages are indian to reasonably expect anyone to know all of them and identify coins is hoping for the moon.l The TPG have failed to attribute some of the coins i have and even long time dealers dont know what they are selling. Throw the inefficient indian mint and you have a problem of plenty. just the other day i found a coin from noida mint, the problem is that noida mint didn't issue that denomination that year. another day the tourism coin was doubled and this is all from my collectio i havent even gone out yet. counterfeits are also very common. The returns are not there for the time invested and that is why the hobby suffers in the east.
macro mode in your camera or get a decent scanner. use verdigone or biox for the verdigris but that coin again looks dicey best of luck
