It took me a minute to figure out what was wrong with this penny. Something is missing! Do you see it?

This is a serious collectors site. Most don't like games. If you look at any coin long enough or close enough you can find what appears to be an error.

Jesus man, my bad. Let me rephrase it: The second U in UNUM is missing, and I thiught it was kind of cool. Especially considering it's the first one I've seen where a single letter is competely erased without cutting into other portions of the coin. Is a little humor really that offensive to you?

Shalom @RabbiSchmooley - Welcome to Coin Talk. I don't believe I have had the opportunity to welcome you.

The legend on that coin may just seem cool looking; but, since you are serious about increasing your knowledge, it is important to understand what in the coin minting process would most likely cause that. By the way, I submit to you that the "u" is not 'completely erased.' Some of it is visible.

Here is a thread from CoinTalk about the part of the coining/minting process that probably caused your "u" to appear as it does. It is a thread with input by some of our most knowledgeable members. I hope you will enjoy reading it.

(May I please make another gentle suggestion? Some might take offense at seeing Jesus' name taken in vain).

    Peace

I appreciate the feedback! And I will refrain from using that name going forward, perhaps in favor of something more fun to say. I'm not sure what I'll replace it with but I'll figure something out!

The U does still have a very slight profile, it's juuuuust barely there. I figured it was a grease filled die, or struck through grease, I just thought it was a cool find! I will of course read the thread, as I am 100% confident there is knowledge to be found there. Thanks again!

That was an excellent read, thank you for that. The video showing the quarter minting process was awesome to watch.

Sorry man. There have been too many new members posting coins with nothing more than expecting others to tell them what, if anything, is wrong. It gets old after a while.

I feel that. And to be clear, I wasn't trying to be a jerk about it. If it helps at al, I am serious about coin collecting even though I'm very green, and I always take the criticisms/perspectives/opinions seriously, and I always try to follow up on suggestions and new research leads. I just felt like the forum needed a lighter mood post since I've seen at least one crapshow post unfold today

RabbiSchmooley is my gamertag lol I'm not jewish at all. Not even a little. Also jews don't recognize Jesus as anything other than a man so it's not blasphemy to them. I went to a bible college for like a semester lol

Jesus was a jew. Many Messianic Jews do in fact acknowledge him as God-incarnate. Even Islam recognizes Jesus as from God.

You offend many with your lack of understanding and cavalier behaviors, both numismatic and spiritual.

I'm sorry you feel that way? I'm confident enough in my faith to not be offended by things like this, and in the spirit of full disclosure, you are the only one to show any outward signs of honest displeasure, so I guess 1 out of the thousands of members here isn't bad all things considered. Please, show me this "many" you speak of.

Also, let's talk about my "cavalier" numismatic behaviors. I've been collecting coins for all of 13 days now. I'm so green I might as well have just broken from the tree. I'm here to learn from the people of this community, and I think I've done a good job considering the very short time I've been at it. Sorry if my trying to get into coin collecting offends you, get used to it I still have a lot to learn lol

And fyi, Jesus was a jew, yes, and the jews that believe in him as the risen savior? They call them gentiles aka christians.

If you look carefully you can see a light letter U.
It's just a Die issue. The letter U was clogged with compacted grease that hardened and did not allow the letter to be formed properly.
    Nice find.

And I'm #2.. Don't use my saviors name in vain ;)
    Peace buddy :angelic:
