Toad helped me find this for my Mom because it has a M on it. So I would like to know what it is. Can any one tell me anything about it? I think it is french. Here is the listing. hya: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=140303341614 It says ARGENT on the edge... Everybody says this but the pics really do NOT do this coin justice. It is beautiful in hand. BTW it looks like it says something underneath the baby closest to the bottom on the obverse. :secret:
Come on, I know someone here has to know something about these things. Edit: I just figure out that ARGENT translates to Silver from French.
 These pictures truly do not do this token justice. It is absolutely stunning in hand. I love it! Thanks to Garrett for getting it for me and Toad for helping him find it. Kiss  The listing called it a 1700 French Jeton, does anyone know anything about these? Thanks
Maybe try posting in the World coins forum page. You might get some answers there. I gots not a clue. Sorry. Ps. Sweet coin
I sent Doug a PM asking him if he could move it but he is offline. If another mod sees this could you move it to world coins?
I hesitate to use this source, however most of the info seems correct.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeton
I found out the info I was looking for. http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=574088&AucID=420&Lot=2105 Pierre Joseph Lorthior, sculptor and medallist, was born at Lille in 1733, became Engraver to the King of France in 1776 and died in Paris in 1813. According to Forrar, Lorthior was author of a number of medals and jetons, also producing medallions and plaquettes "of elegant design and fine execution". He was "especially clever as an Engraver of seals and gaming counters, and produced some good work in gems". He is know to have engraved seals and signets for Marie Antoinette, madame la Dauphine, the duc d'Orleans and the comte d'Artois as well as for various other private individuals.
Nice looking jeton. I believe ( because of the ARGENT stamped on the edge ) that it's a re-strike. Right?
I do believe that it is a medal and looking at the mint mark on the edge produced sometime from 1974, that is a fish next to the word Argent is it not? If it is then it is the Paris mint mark, and they put the name of the metal on as well
There is a lot described in english and one described in french. Note that in the french it says that the year of the piece is 1727, years before Lorthior is born. However, it does say it's done by him. Maybe it's a typo, I dunno. I don't think diocletian is right. In the english auction it says that the edge has a cornucopia (so, not a fish) and "argent" (yes, silver in french). You have no proof that it's a restrike, but also no warranty that it isn't.
Do you agree that it was minted between "1880 and 1898, 1901"? It all points that way. So I wouldn't call it a restrike, unless someone knows if the french mint had used this Lorthior design before this time.
