Question for Half Dollar Roll Searchers

I would think your chances of hitting the mega-million lottery would be better than finding a Walker in a bank roll.... especially a 1916. I picture a couple of retirees cashing out the silver halves they had been saving all lives, just to pay the bills.

OMG I would die if I found all of that.

I have found out that I am one of many roll searching in my area. So if you aren't having much luck, you are probably searching something that was already searched and turned in.

I love the small town idea posted earlier. I thing that is a great idea.

I will be ordering every box from this bank I can get now. I am deep in the stack.

Today I brought a large platter of bagels and cream cheese to the branch.

I want these tellers HAPPY!

They all think the half boxes are heavy.

Try picking up 3-4 at a time and carrying them any distance.

I have silver fever just thinking about tapping some more boxes.

I love opening the boxes and seeing a bunch of rolls with silver on the ends.

I take time on these and really look them over, savoring each coin.

It sure beats the dirty boxes of slugs I was getting.

This is a small local bank, but I know they get their coins from a big service.

In the last two weeks........

I searched 36 boxes and it really doesn't take me any time. 12 hours of watching educational videos waiting for my wife to get home from her evening job. I don't think I could sit still doing that otherwise.

1- Bicentennial silver (not proof, but S mm)

6 Silver proofs (my first, never seen in circulation by me previous)

4 double strike errors (I now have 14 total)

Very pleased to have these 7+ new tubes full. I have filled a shoebox with silver since January swapping halves.

I have recently tried to get boxes from other banks. All want large fees of $6 box or 10 cents a roll. Different branches of banks I get them free!

I have accounts at all. I decline if there is a fee.

My main bank delivers 16 boxes a week for free.
They politely informed me that I will have to pay $8 per order to get these.

I will pay that, think it's reasonable for 16 boxes.

My dump banks are free and i keep them happy by spreading out my dumps at their many local branches or using a friend at a close by branch to dump 10,000 or more at a time.

I have held off buying silver bars at $12.60/oz to keep my swap money.

I think I will fill a couple more albums as I have piles of uncirculated quality coins from most years and mint marks. I have so many nice numismatic Kennedy's I don't know what to do with them.

area being searched

i was just wondering if anyone on here searches halves (or any other denomination) in the Pacific Northwest (U.S.); as that's where i live, haven't quite gotten started yet and want to know my odds (need to get the money to get started).

i was at a Subway restaurant and they had a roll of halves, plus one loose. i got all of them in change and i believe i have a toned bicentennial half; Denver minted (was in roll). years in roll ranged from '74 to '98 (with gaps), all of them are either denver minted, or no mint mark.

can you guys give me a list of all the good years to look for so i can return the most pieces without giving up the more valuable pieces (aka more uncommon).

Looking to trade some of the walker for year that I'm missing, not sure of the grade or such since I have no idea how to 'grade' a coin...

Question.....

When you buy a box of 50 rolls, open them and look through the coins, do you just take back the ones you don't want back to the bank in loose form to cash back in? Do you ever experience negative responses from the bank when you return the unwanted coins you've searched through, like you're making them work too much over this obsessive hobby?

I do like the bagels idea, when I was a teller, that would have worked for me!!

Lastly, are the rolls you get in a box the type that are tightly wrapped, with the rolled edges, or the type that individuals have turned into the bank, with paper rolls with folded ends? If it can be either/or, do you find it makes much difference in your chances of finding some silver?

Sorry if these are dumb questions, still learnin' here! :whistle: I like the idea of trying this out since I really enjoy finding silver coins, I just want to be prepared before I go into some local banks and either annoy them to death, or waste my time in buying huge amounts of coins in a vain search of silver! Thanks all!!

 

Being new to this myself, only been hunting rolls for 3 months. The banks near me in Houston will not take loose coins in large amounts, so I roll them and take to a different bank from the one I get them at. From what I understand in Houston the Wells Fargo Branches use Brinks for the money delivery and the Chase banks use Loomis. I had a bad experince with one Wells Fargo branch manager, so I take all my rolled coins to her branch location (she wanted to charge me $5 per box i ordered). The branch I'm getting my coins at (another Wells Fargo) orders me 1 box per week for free.

What I would like to find at is at what point does the branch 'sell' their rolled coins back to Brinks.

I use the brown paper rolls I get at the bank and put the rolls back in the box, and let the bank take the box with my rolls in it. No problems with turning in rolled coins.

Any other roll hunters in the Houston area?

 

I really find it hard to believe that you can find that many Walker's in rolls. It just doesn't make sense to me. I read threads where someone searches box after box and ends up with a few 40% Kennedy's. Twenty-two Walker's in two boxes defies logic, unless (like I mentioned above) a bunch of people are cashing in their old halves for face. Could be, considering the times. Just a shame that people don't realize that melt value (let alone numismatic value) far exceeds the face value.

 

My friend that got me started could not believe it either told me that was very unusual to find that many coins in 2 boxes, the split was 30 in one box and 32 in the other. the box i just did had nothing in it. So much for the lucky streak...

 

Finally!

I got my bank to order not just one but 4 boxes of halves for me! And the best part is... I don't have to pay extra!

 

i saw the post one time (whoever it was) said they were in Western WA ... i'm actually in Eastern WA (almost in ID), and just a few miles away from OR, so i have a broad range of area to check.

found at least 2 banks locally that will sell me boxes for face (no fee), and i'm not even customer

just wondering, would it be better to do boxes, or bags (if i can get the smaller bags, and not the ones u have to have a forklift to even move)

 

found 10 40%er's and 1 x 90%er, the best find was a 1976 S (not silver:rolling but still a neat find, it has a small bump on the neck.. but hey it will still look nice in the collection.

Also found a one that has a gold tint on the entire coin.. any ideas what or why?

 

Gold plating is a novelty. I have a full tube of them now. Not worth a thing except the few silver coins which were plated. I find them chrome plated as well.

I have found 120 walkers from rolls since last Thanksgiving including a 1916.

Half dollars rarely see daylight and there are plenty of old rolls at the bottom of the stacks in some vaults. Sometimes it takes me a while to get to them. The skunk boxes are on top, guarding them!

I mine them until they are gone and my banks coin service has to move on to a different vault and the process repeats.

I used to take all my halves back to different branches. Lately, my main branch (that I use for checking, etc) gives me frowns and static when I return them, so, now they get back four boxes a week instead of two every other week.

 

I can never get even one roll, at a bank.

 

Scout your local branches...somebody will be willing to order some for you I'm sure.:smile

 

where are you getting those rolls..

 

In Houston I'm able to get boxes of halves at the local Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and my credit union at work. The Well Fargo orders one box a week currently, the credit union order one box every 2 weeks, and as just able to get the BoA to start ordering not sure yet how often the will order yet Next place to try is the local WaMu.

All of the branches that are ordering boxes for have asked that I not return the coins back to them, thats an easy enough rule to follow for me.

If you are getting boxes from three different banks, that makes $1500 worth of half dollars. Where do you return them all?

What are options for rolling them again after searching them?
