Hi guys ! Starting this thread to get to know you guys a little more. My question is this one: for how long have you been colleting coins, and what started you? I have been collecting coins for the past 10 years. Since then I have amounted a nice little n00b collection of odds and ends composed of anything from ancient to modern coinage. ( I call it a n00b collection because I feel it’s never big enough and should not be considered a collection, but it should be since it contains over 600 pieces, about 80 of true value.) There are two events that leaded me to start collecting coins. First off, when I was 9 or so my aunt gave me a coin from Saudi Arabia, I always found that it was neat and it made me fathom what coin possibilities were out there. Secondly when I was about 13 or so , my dad was making a hole for a flagpole when he uncovered a shoe with a buckle…. In the shoe was a 1876 1 cent coin from the Netherlands odd find but none the less these where the corner stones of my coin collecting sickness.
I've always had interest and I come from a antique collecting family, so I guess I was meant to be a collector of some sort...but me and my dad always looked through his pocket change when I was younger. But I just started getting into it a litte more no longer than maybe a week ago...and I love it! lol. adam
I was bitten by the bug at a young age. Since I was twelve, Ive been collecting U.S. coins and have watched my collection grow from modern circulated coins to wheat cents, Indian cents, buffalo nickels, silver, mint sets, and now commemoratives. I don't think there is a cure, but I'll survive as long as my wife deals with me! My next step is getting my daughter started. I already have a silver proof set and ASE for her, but she's only 14 months so I'll have to be patient.
I started on my own when I was 15. Mostly family would give me cheap old coins from Portugal. Never had any money so throughout high school I mostly filled in holes with not so good examples and also gathered world currency. In college I kinda let go of the habit, but it came back 3 or 4 years ago. Now I collect mostly world silver coins. I do not know how many coins I have. I believe it's something like 1000 world coins (including 300 from the US), 300 or 400 euro coins, and perhaps 450 portuguese coins. I don't know how many of these have a significant value. I don't have my collection with me because I came to the US last year, and currently I have a couple hundred (if not more) coins in Portugal still waiting their holder and all that
I started collecting coins when I was 12 yrs old back in 1977. So its been 30 odd years for me off and on. I started out interested in a few Morgans my Great Uncle had in an old cigar box mixed in with his WW1 uniform, boots and helmet. After he passed away a few years went by and I remembered the old cigar box and went looking. My brother and I each got a Morgan and I got the French coins he also had in the box.
A little over a year here. about 7 months seriously collecting ancients though, the others was that US stuff. stainless
I started when I was 10 years old. My older brother started collecting pennies so I did too. He had the good sense to quit somewhere along the line and I an still at it, 50+ years later. Added "Presidential" series, Jefferson, Rosevelt, Washington, Kennedy, etc. Just recently I moved away from everything else to focus on the one cent pieces. I'm not into all the possible varieties and errors, just regular mint production issue for each year.
Oh bout 30 years ago when Pa was doing some digging in the back yard to pour a cement slab for the dog kennels found that funny looking nickel with a indian on it. Still have them about 15 in all we found that day. Then come the girls and gave it up for a few years.Been back at it for the last 15+ off and on mostly on )
I was "bitten" at age twelve in 1966. my grandma gave me an uncirculated 1923 Peace dollar for mowing her lawn for several weeks. I was amazed at the beauty of thecoin and it's size also. I asked if she had any more and she brought out a promotional plastic bank issued by the First Agricultural Bank that was nearly full of silver coins, Buffalo nickels, W.L. halves, etc. I earned and recieved every coin in that bank eventually and spent every friday afternoon at the same bank asking tellers for rolls that I went through and culled the best from. Sadly I started at the tail end of the pull from circulation of the silver coins but being a small town ( Gt. Barrington,Ma.) silver coins stayed around for some time and probably thru 1968. In that time I was able to aquire quite a few coins in my initial folders. This is one of those stories that the younger generations hate to hear about us boomers, but what a fun time it was.
bitten at the age of 8 I was searching rolls & filling Whitman folders when I was 8 years old in the mid 1960s. I was the only coin collector in the family but everyone fed me what they could. My dad got me a Type set album (1800-date) which I could not fill from circulation. Therefore, I got to know the local coin shop(s) and bid boards. In 1969 I found an error coin in circulation and was quickly hooked on errors. Very best regards, collect89
Everyone has great stories about how they became a coin collector! Great stuff guys and galls, keep it up.
As a young teen, and then "reinfected" when our then five-year old daughter showed an interest in Canadian Cents, and the monarch depicted on them... http://www.irwinsjournal.com/ijonline/ijqueen.htm
I was stung by a Toad I started at the age of 11, when a friend of mine had brought an 1891 IHC. I thought it was worth millions, turned out to be only worth a buck or two. But this still started it all, and I plan to continue for the rest of my life!
Large pennies or small ? and what monarch ?? I have this obsession with anything Victoria or Edward VII
