thanks. Was pretty fun to find. I had a half gallon jar of Wheaties that I had never sorted and I knew I had to have a few cool finds.

Nice find indeed. Surprisingly nice condition for one found in a bulk lot, too.

A little mineral oil or Vaseline on a cotton swab should probably remove most of the scuz on the obverse without affecting the natural color. A dealer friend of mine uses lighter fluid and Q-tips for this kind of work.

I guess you could use a bamboo skewer or toothpick if some of the crud is more stubborn, as long as you're gentle at it. (A wooden implement should be soft enough not to scratch the metal in most cases, as long as you don't go nuts with it.)

Gently remove the crud but leave the toning intact.

I did the Vaseline-and-toothpick conservation on this, one of my luckiest cherrypicks, since it had a big gob of dirt obscuring the mintmark when I found it in a bulk Wheat cent lot in 2006.

I shouted out loud when the dirt came off and I saw that "D" hiding under there! After my careful cleaning, the coin received a straight grade of XF40 at PCGS, and as I recall, I sold it for somewhere around $700. Which isn't bad, considering it cost me about a nickel!

Still looks pretty rough but I took your advice and the crud for the most part came off. I practiced a bit in some pocket change before going at it. Thanks for the tips. Really appreciate it.
    What do you think

Real nice I've seen them where it took a lot of effort to see the VDB but you can see that one clear as a bell, you would have a hard time finding one in that condition for less than 30 bucks!

Thank you. I couldn’t even see the VDB until I took my phone out and used the camera to zoom in on it haha.
That’s pretty cool. It’s fun to learn a bit about value. I’d go out on a limb and say that I don’t think I’d ever sell or trade. I’m too lazy and it’s hard to think about profit when I paid face value hahaha. Plus I love history.

    Yup!! Thank you!

yeah was my Friday night last night and decided that after my youngest was asleep that I’d sit down with a beverage and pour out my hat and have some fun. I woke my wife accidentally up because I was excitedly talking to myself.

If your wife is like me she loves you but is convinced she married a nut case. Lol

That would definitely describe our marriage hahahah. She just shakes her head and doesn’t understand how someone can get so excited over pocket change.

She appreciates the fact that I have a fun cheap hobby that keeps me distracted. It also gives her control of the tv in the evenings haha

My wife lets me buy whatever coin I want without question but she keeps telling me that when I die she's spending it at face value. Lol

Nice find. It's a strong VDB, too. That adds to it a little.

My wife hadn't been too keen on me buying stuff every month at shows until last August when I sold some of my extra junk silver (when it was $29 an ounce), bought some stuff, and still walked out of the show with more money in my wallet than what I came in with. She didn't say a word. Hasn't said much about it since.

Looks pretty good. I'd say you improved the appearance (removed the crud) without messing up the original brown color by overscrubbing it. Well done. Nice find.
