Here is another 1988 P Lincoln Cent pulled this morning. It is another coin that is cool to look at. Not really sure how common this is, but I have never seen it before. Anyway, I thought I would share it with everyone. Let me know what you think? Here is the same image without my disturbances added...
Jeff, is there any other letters or digits missing ? I believe this is "filled die". Cool find though .
I agree with filled Die. On the Die the Recessed letter G had some hardened compacted material just in that one spot. When the blank planchet was struck the metal flowed into the recess but that one piece of material did not allow the metal to flow in. Interesting.
Filled dies usually do NOT leave such distinct 'walls' - the indentation is too perfect, imo Don't know exactly what happened to it, but I'm not seeing it as a filled die, chipped piece out of the letter, etc. I believe it's PMD; the right horizontal crossbar of the G is missing too.
Absolutely Dialupsux! The only photo that I edited was the first one in the thread. I have several Editing Software Titles that I prefer using, depending on the project. I used "MICROSOFT PAINT 3D" in this instance. My favorite "free" photo editing software is GIMP. It is a free and very efficient cross-platform image editor, rich with content and options. I will provide the link below. As for hardware, I am using a digital microscope to capture the up close, detailed photographs. YOU MAY FIND AND DOWNLOAD GIMP BY CLICKING HERE
I was thinking the same thing! The walls are too perfect. Jeff, can you shoot us a really good close-up of the gap?
Could it have possibly been a strike through of some small debris? It looks so perfect and I can't see any marks or extra metal in the area. I've not seen one like it before, but then I haven't examined as many cents as many of the other members here.
It is very hard to capture a great photo zoomed in this far, but... Here is the first one... It may be a bit too close and therefor blurry. Here is another one a bit further out and maybe a little better quality...
Great photos Jeff. Now it shows that the G evidently took a hit, so PMD, but still a cool find and keeper IMHO.
