I dusted off my metal detector a few weeks back and headed down the road. There is a site where an old farm once stood. I’m friends with the land owner Mark so off to see what I could find. The problem with this area is the massive amount of pull tabs, there has to be thousands scattered everywhere. I get the settings adjusted to remove that noise and I found a wheat cent so now I’m pumped. A few minutes later I get a signal and dig down and find a blackened coin shaped item. It was unrecognizable. Put in my pocket and continued the hunt. Found a few other post 1964 change and called it a day. back to the blackened coin, I got home a washed it off. Not much help so I soaked it in olive oil for a few week. I then cleaned with water and then dipped into acetone. here is the coin, I’m not sure of the date (1897) but I am sure the V Nickel has been through a fire. The reverse is where it gets interesting. I’m going to guess PMD but I’m not sure due to the coins condition. Anyway it was fun and keeps me active and ready to hunt again.
I'm thinking something was corroded onto it. Or into it. With enough time underground, all sorts of things can happen.
