Finally getting around to imaging a coin after a loooooong while. Some of you might actually remember when and where I picked it up - almost exactly 3 years ago (based on my original CoinTalk thread "Whitman Album + COA = Wackadoo Lincoln Cent Toning" on January 5, 2017.) Here is the original photo I took of the Whitman album (where the coins had been covered/partially covered by a COA): Especially jester3681 (who apparently hasn't been here in three years; I really hope the coin didn't curse him or something) but who picked up the 1981 at the bottom of the page and sent it in to PCGS (where it garnered an MS66RB!) Here is the 1968 D that sat in the top row (#2 coin, next to the 1969 D with the corner of the COA): Now...that obverse looks really, really nice. Like...nice enough that with the color I feel like maybe I should spend the money and send it in to get slabbed. So...what do you think? Worth it? Not? (My goal is to sell it, not to keep it - and I'm not breaking B/S/T rules by offering it for sale here FWIW.) What would you do? What do you think I should do? Thanks, and enjoy the rest of your weekend!
I think there is always a market for toned coins, especially with interesting patterns. The main question is...will the coin grade, where will it fall on the scale, or will the ding it for questionable toning (even if a copy of the original picture/album is included with the coin.)
Save the trouble with the picture that really won't make any difference and would likely just end up in the shredder. Anyone can put coins into an old album and pretend they were there forever.
I would give it a shot. I see nothing that says QT. Also the coin looks like it has some real nice luster.
Not that it matters much - obviously some piece of something covered them - but what COA could it possibly be? Nothing in the album ever came with a COA that I know of. I'd guess it was someone's checklist or maybe his mistress's phone number !
It had a COA since it wasn't just the regular Whitman Lincoln Memorial Cent album, the first page had two aluminum Abraham Lincoln medals - so some kind of specialty set, maybe from Littleton - don't think I took a picture of the front of the album, unfortunately.
Plus, PCGS already gave the 1981 their seal of approval (although that was 3 years ago, who knows what they'd do in 2021.)
I am sure that you send more coins in than I, beings that I like my coins raw and have never had one entombed. Honestly though I see an naturally toned coin.
Not as many coins a year as you'd think. I think I just sent 11 coins to PCGS late last year...and might have sent 10-20 to NGC last year. Prior to that there have only been a few times I've sent a larger batch. I try to keep it only to coins that would be really worth sending in. (Or, some coins I make mistakes on, haha)
Toned cents have been fairly hot-particularly among a dedicated group of collectors looking to fill a full BN (and occasionally RB) set. Memorial Cents are probably less in demand than Wheats, but I could still see that one bringing some interest. I would guess it's worth adding in to a larger submission. @robec @CircCam @BlackberryPie are some people that could give you a better idea.
Unfortunately, I don't have any of the "untoned" ones left. I still have the top three, the 1971 D and 1972, and the 1975. Have the 1971 D and 1972 imaged already:
I have some "toned" Wheat Cents but not in the grade like yours. Do you need high MS grade and toning to get people interested? I don't want to hijack your thread so I won't post any here.
@Inspector43 - I won't be offended if you share some of your coins. It's part of the discussion IMO. Here, I'll get us started with one I just imaged:
