The photo below is courtesy of Great Collections....... Now I been collecting fifty years and I still get childlike giddy at 18th century US coinage. The half below is currently at $13,500.00 at auction. PCGS lists the value at $19,000.00. As far as I can tell, the only redeeming quality that separates this half from a slug is the shadow of a date that remains....... Would you enjoy owning this half knowing that it cost you between $13,000.00 - $19,000.00?
God no, I would put it towards a new car before I buy that mess. But I am sure someone with a deep wallet will buy it, always a sucker, I don't care how rare.
Maybe if I was collecting early American coinage, or if I was competing in a low ball registry. But seriously no.
No, even if I were a collector of draped bust half dollars, I'd pass. That $19,000.00 could be put towards a nicer specimen or one of life's many necessities.
I am not a condition snob in the least. I collect VG coins all day long if it fits a purpose. I was never one for BU US coins when I collected them, (older coins), but loved AU53-58 coins, (yeah, I bet a ton of my old AU's would get slabbed BU nowadays but that is a different topic). However, I would rather not have a coin than one displayed here. That one, having literally almost no trace of the coin left, simply does not cut it for me. It would not feel like I owned one at all owning that. Talk about the ultimate lowball set coin though....wow.
Dang, too bad my stimulus check wasn't oh.....$18,400 more. Though, in all honesty, that coin is garbage IMO.
The 1796--1797 skinny eagle halves are the only holes in my half dollar year set. No, I'm not interested in filling that hole with such an example--and I refuse to pay for a better one.
I wouldn't have any idea what a stimulus check is.... All I know I am sure my taxes will be going up for a very long time to pay for all of this "free money".
Not me man, even the cat huffed and walked away. Any time you need a scope and interpreter to view a coin... I can buy a lifetime supply of Romana Black Sambuca.
Yeah, if there was ever an example of a case where the money would be better spent on charity, this would be it. Even collectors are going to have their limits. Call me crazy but I wouldn't give $100 for that.
This is one of those coins that don't come up very often and the price doubles in better condition. Not for me but I can see a collector wanting the coin.
