George H.W. and Barbara Bush 2020 Presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Set

Just noticed this now on the mint website, Tis a bit steep in my opinion for what it is. No idea how long it was on there, but maybe some of you were collecting these medals, so You should be aware it went on sale today and still available as of 1 minute ago.

Wow, I just looked up the prices on the gold First Spouse issues for Barb, and now I have a nosebleed. I like the design, but not enough to pay a $700/oz premium for it...

 

It's like a 340ish premium with gold at 1880 and the coin being a half troy ounce of 99.99

 

this particular version is a copper medal, so it's the cheapest option if you like the design and wanted one without breaking the bank for the gold.

 

I just went and looked up the one Gold Spouse I bought from the mint, in early March 2011. At that point, gold was between $710 and $720 per half-ounce. I paid $866 for the coin, a $150 premium. Gold is up 32% from that level now. Why has the premium gone up by 130%?

 

The mint has started acting more like the major mints of the world do and pricing more like them as well. The other likely thing is these haven't been big sellers so they probably want to get what they can for the ones that do sell

 

Ordinarily I'd laugh at "these aren't selling so let's raise the price", but I think it might actually work here. I'm not sure demand for these is very price-elastic. The very few folks who want to collect the whole series will pay up regardless, and so might the "you'll be sorry you whined about premiums when gold hits $10000" crowd.

 

Plus it's not necessarily a yearly series. It could be a while until the next one which cushions the blow for series collectors.

 

And that would be $680 per oz, not that far off JeffB's $700 figure.

And jeffB has a valid question as to why the premium over metal price has risen from 22% to 37%. Of course the answer is because they can do it. As a new issue they DO have a monopoly.

 

I wonder if the G.H.W. Bush dollars will be available individually P,D and S. I have the rest of the Presidential dollars and definitely want to add these.

Don't know if the U.S. Mint will be minting the first spouse coin separately, so I'd better buy this overpriced offering since I've been collecting the first spouse coins separately from the Presidential coins. Also wonder if the Mint will be producing a proof version of the Bush Presidential dollar. I would think so, simply for the Mint to overcharge for another coin.

 

My understanding is the bronze medal is only in this set, however you could buy the first spouse gold coin. Anyways, it's the only offering for the bronze one that I'm aware of, and I know some of yall had to of collected the bronze ones.

 

Yes, I collected the set of bronze spouses. When my purchase of Babs come in, I'll have to make the decision if I should free her to join her sisters or leave her in the card. At only $25, not much of a decision!
