I believe they have what you call "population figures" for a particular grade, but I'm not a slab collector and will defer to the experts....
Yes. What you are looking for is a Population Report. PCGS publishes theirs called "The PCGS Population Report" and NGC publishes theirs called "NGC Census". These pop reports are not free but sometimes you can buy an out-of-date edition from someone.
Yep... and that's the problem. NGC and PCGS require you be a paid member. NGC used to publish theirs for free, but lately protected that info.
Here's another option, albeit a bit clunkier... For most coins, Heritage includes the census population as a part of the coin's auction listing. You could look up any given coin that way. Of course, you get them one coin at a time, instead of the nice tabular format supplied by the TPGs.
I too look around at other forums. You obviously don't like the answers you got on the other forums, so you repeat them here. Notice that you get similar answers to that question here also.
HAHAHA Looks like the internet police have arrived. I actually posted both at the same time. The more people that look at my question the quicker I get an answer. Have you ever thought of that Carl? Probably not, you were probably to busy criticizing someone. HAHAHA what a joke! By the way, thanks everyone that answered my question. Great idea 900fine
EDIT: Freaky I think I may have read your message wrong. If you were talking to Carl and not me, please disregard all of this...haha Internet police #2 (thats you Freaky) Obviouslly it is the way to get help, I asked a question I got an answer It may not be the way to get help from you Freaky, but why do I need freaky people to help me when I have all of these other people that are nice and willing to help me are you people against posting on other forums or something? Is this like the war against the coin forums? What is the big deal really? I see people posting the same thing on multiple forums all the time. It is called exposure. The more exposure you get the more answers you get and the quicker answers you get. There is no need for any other comments on this thread. I have my answer. The internet police have taken this way off topic (now im sounding like a internet police...hahaha) Anyone else that would like to comment feel free to PM me.
With all the crackin out, crossin over, and resubmitin how accurate can these population figures be? Especially for the middle of the road ms coins.
Relax stumpy. Don't worry about the internet police, haha. I am a member of more than one forum, and I have brought up the same topic on multiple forums before. I don't see anything wrong with that. There are different people on different forums who's opinions I might want on something. No big deal.
900 has supplied the most accurate info on free pop reports, if you look, you will also get " free" numismedia dealer pricing...it is clunky and time consuming, but the Heritage archives and auction info is the best source for this without paying a subscription fee
There was a study published about this in Coin World some years ago. Short and sweet the concensus was that the pop numbers for common coins would be off by about 20%. The more scarce a coin is the more that percentage goes down.
I believe the above is untrue. Specifically, while NGC requires you to register with their site, they do not require payment to get to their population reports. You are correct about PCGS. Respectfully...Mike
I dunno Mike, I thought so too. But the last time I tried to access them I got the same message - only for paying members. I do believe they have changed the rules recently.
They are available but 20% off I don't think so. They are available but 20% off I don't think so. The pop reports are certaily available but I would never trust they they are off only 20% - my experience with dealers tell me that may be true for most common high grade and modern coins but every dealer I know has played the "re-submitting game on many occasions with harder type coins. So 20%, I would not buy that and that's just with my dealers about 30 or so. There is no way to ever know for sure though but if I had to go by what I have seen it would be closer to 35% maybe a tad less but not much. By the way you can get on ANACS for free and look it up but the others I think you have to pay some type of membership fee but I went on ANACS last week for free. 20% with all the different companies - that figure just don't seem kosher to me.
p.s. GDJMSP is correct. I just checked the website: "This guide is a benefit of paid NGC Collectors Society membership. Unlock your access by logging in or joining now." http://ngccoin.com/poplookup/ FWIW, NGC gives me a free membership and I never noticed the above text on the pop report page.
