Found this beauty in a coin roll today, looks like a double die to me. Anybody with better eyes/more experience have any opinions?
I guess i probably could have circled what I saw huh. Its tough getting quality pictures with this cell phone
It's very hard to get good pics with my cell as well. I think though if it's true double die you wouldn't have to circle anything. It would be more obvious.
That was my original thought as well, but it seems that a lot of the errors I see on youtube and forums and stuff are very very subtle. Things I normally wouldn't even look at you know?
Youtube and eBay can be very misleading. Lots of people pushing stuff to people who don't know any better.
I'm answering this from my own experience. I used to think a lot of coins looked double die. Very nice people on here have educated me well.
And that is exactly why I'm here! Coins are fascinating and finding any kind of informational resources (especially if you're on a budget) is really tough. I'm so thankful that there are so many knowledgeable people here, and I promise none of the knowledge is wasted!
The subject error is called a doubled die and any doubling you see, at least on this coin, is from a deteriorating die/hub or MD, mechanical doubling. See article. https://www.ngccoin.com/news/article/5688/Double-Dies-vs-Machine-Doubling/ Hope this helps and there are other sites offering info about this.
A couple of good sites that cover a lot and not just what their names imply www.doubleddie.com & www.maddieclashes.com. These are run by John Wexler & Robert Neff. It's free info, both are run by experts in their fields and they cover a lot so be prepared to hunker down.
There are a number of different types of doubling but only one is worth extra money. Research would help. I'm not seeing anything special on your coins.
