I took this bicentennial quarter to a local "numismatist" and they said they had no idea what was going on with this one. Looks like a cud to me, can anyone confirmor help me figure out what I'm looking at?

I'm no professional numismatist by any means, but I would say perhaps that's just a die chip.

Just so I know the thought process, what makes you think that vs a cud? I'm a dummy so every bit of insight is helpful lol

From my novice experience with coin errors and such, a cud is usually at the rim of a coin.

And like they say on this forum frequently, Google is your friend, and this is the reason why......I found this in less than 10 seconds using google:

I did google it, I've spent a week trying to figure out what it could be lol else I would not have posted it here. I appreciate the information, thank you!

It's all about buzz words. What is a cud on a coin? What is a die chip on a coin? Punch those words into the search engine and you'll have more than enough information before long.

It's a very small die chip. A cud must be on the rim. IMG_2898.JPG

A cud is a break along the rim that extends into the field.

Interpreting your local numismatist: Oh crap! I should change my sign. "I DON'T DO ERRORS!"

I will have to give these keywords a try. I'm determined to be a collector lol be forewarned, my posts will probably become commonplace for a time

Surprisingly, most dealers don't do errors because they are too time consuming. Not to worry, though! We have one of the foremost error dealers in the country, here, as a member.....Fred Weinberg. You can find his store online, too.

Just bear with us. We have short tempers and a strange sense of humor but we're willing to help if you're willing to listen.
