So I think we can all agree that APMEX is not considered the budget or cheap option when it comes to coin selling. But this coin caught my eye. The first thing I thought when I saw it was: “This coin looks bruised & bloodied. It looks like someone got shot in the leg and had this coin in their pocket.” Then I saw it was an 1862 and realized it was minted during the Civil War when our nation itself was bruised & bloodied. How ironically beautiful. But also it’s a PF63 19th century Half Dollar in the $2000 or so price range which I don’t see often. What do you guys think? Should I buy it? Thanks
Even though its legit i wouldn't buy a coin like this raw with this color it should be at least certified by pcgs or ngc i would pass on it if not certified and I don't think it would straight grade.
Thats what I’m asking though is if the price is right. Like maybe others have seen similar for a lot cheaper. It’s hard for me to tell what a coin is worth if it’s not one I usually collect like this so I just wanted a second opinion on it. Just to be safe.
This isn't a series I'm familiar with/ right price e.t.c this is all I have to say Goodluck more people will chime in.
Looks like it is rated a high R6. If that is the Judd scale, maybe less than 20 known? Pretty scarce piece at any rate. I believe the price can jump around on pieces like this, it's not the easiest to value them. My opinion, which means nothing, is that $2200 doesn't seem ridiculous, for what it is.... OTOH, doesn't the color seem strange for a copper coin?
It's beautiful, but a really nice AU58 PCGS sold on eBay recently for "best offer accepted" with a list price of $975 - it just seems a bit pricey to me. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1862-Seated-Liberty-Half-Dollar-AU-58-PCGS-/124487550903?hash=item1cfc0947b7:gSIAAOSw1lBf2Iph&nma=true&si=hRNF4ll3qQvoGzeBrtDS30rF%2BcY%3D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557Counterpoint, Of course, I'm a cheapskate.
I guess it depends on how you look at it eh? I keep imagining an entire collection of shiny high MS Seated Dollars and then 5 bloody bruised ones for 1841-1845 to represent the Civil War and all of them on a wall.
It does but I mean only 11 have ever been graded. Only 8 have been graded higher. Plus it’s a PF63 so it’s like..one of those pieces you’ll rarely get to see let alone own. To have a piece that
If this is the same coin shown on your previous post, it's a Pattern Coin. Says right on the label J 296. You can't compare it to the prices given for coins made for circulation. Research Pattern Prices.
Yeah it is I accidentally posted in the wrong place and idk how to delete it. :/ But yeah an AU58 and a PF63 cannot be compared. Even an MS 63 & PF63 can’t be compared for a price range because they’re both totally different.
Here's a list of previous auction prices: Here's the link: https://www.pcgs.com/auctionprices/details/1862-j-296-pr/60446 As you can see, the PF63BN (PATTERN) sold for $2,040. I thought it may possibly be the same coin but I just checked. It's not the same coin.
