Ebay just seems to brutal for a noob. I looked at some Walkers and Peace Dollars tonight. I spent about an hour searching etc. I tell ya, the pictures for the most part aren't close enough for me to make a decision. Some look toned, some cleaned, bad lighting, poor description. Wow, I would rather just turn around and run the other way than to try that yet. Too risky. Besides I don't want to wait X amount of days to see if I won something. I also think the Buy it Now prices are usually too high (Imho). Just looking for a nice site to call home for some of my shopping needs. I prefer to just look for AU when I buy something. I am a noob collector, so I just really don't want to go the slabbed route yet. That stuff is too far out of my league ( like Heritage). Nice pictures, nice service, nice descriptions, reasonable shipping, Peace Dollars and Walkers are the things I am looking for. I mean if I find a coin I like, I don't especially want to spend $5+ to get it too me. Kinda takes away from getting a nice deal. Don't worry Borgovan, I haven't forgotten about you. You took real good care of me too. I am just hunting for a nice in/between from ebay and the really expensive places. Open for opinions...maybe I am just asking too much. Let me know (be gentle though)
You might try coin shows if you haven't already, you get to see the coins up close and have no shipping charges. www.coinshows.com/indiana.html
I can't help you, but I can tell you you're right about the BIN prices. Instead of an auction lasting a few days, risking to sell a coin for a lower price, they just display the coins for one or two months, waiting for that one stupid person that will buy it. It must work, because they're still doing it...
Okay, I buy almost all my coins on ebay! I get all my coins at reasonable deals. First of all, you are not suppose to bid on things that have like 6 days left... Wait until the last couple of minutes, and snipe your coins, you will be suprised at the low prices you will pay for your coins! TRUST ME! Also, good sites www.ha.com www.teletrade.com www.fastcoin.com www.coinhood.com (Not too many items for sale, and when we do, they are links to ebay auctions)
Good dealers are hard to find, and when people do, they seldom broadcast the fact if they intend to bid on the items themselves. Check the "Open" subforums, many members also have stores/auctions on ebay and you have better knowledge of them than a stranger. Look for 99.5-100% rating, easy returns, low shipping, and very very clear photos. I am also into gemstones and I will give a reference here to one of my best dealers and I consider a friend to illustrate. He is a GIA graduate, and I consider a friend. He will tell you when the gem is synthetic or diffused, has a 31 day return, 800 number, often free shipping, etc. and look at his photos. If you ever consider gemstones, put him on your perferred dealer list IMO, Now find coin dealers like this and you are set. http://shop.ebay.com/merchant/tiptopgem_W0QQ_nkwZQQ_armrsZ1QQ_fromZQQ_mdoZ Jim
There are also several good online dealers. If you are worried about Ebay then stay away. For the coins I look for I usually end up buying from a dealer, but I do use ebay. Plus depending on what you are looking for if you bid enough times you will win one - just make sure the seller is a good one. Also make sure they have good clear pictures of the coins. You can't just watch one night - I surf ebay every night possible to see what I can find. And yes sometimes I do snipe - I am on broadband and can usually bid with 10 to 15 seconds left. Sniping or not sniping I first determine what I think the coin is worth and bid that amount. Just take your time and look around. What I do with some online dealers is I wait until they have 3 or 4 coins I want then buy them. That makes the shipping reasonable. Of course sometimes I get free shipping - when you buy enough.
I have several ebay sellers book marked, but the one I like the most is aspencoins, really big on world silver coins. I think they follow the major criteria of what a good seller should be. Can any experienced collector second me on this?
i look for auctions ending about mid week................but with ebays new rules look at detailed fb..................also pass on turd grading parties like sgs..... due dilligence..........there are deals there.................
I always looks for Ebay auctions ending in no more than one day. Ebay isnt really all that bad. I'd suggest finding a few good Ebay dealers through suggestions here and maybe do a "search" in the forums for good Ebay dealers and see what comes up. After you find a few good dealers, establish a relationship with a few cheaper purchases just to kind of test the water so to speak. After you become comfortable with them then you can feel better with bidding higher amounts. I have been buying on Ebay since 2002 and have never had a problem with any coins that I've bought.
I stopped using Ebay COMPLETELY due to a bad experience with a non-coin purchase. I never did well on Ebay, the best you can hope for is an ok deal but you will probably be ripped off. Ebay has many outright thieves and feedback does not help that much in spotting them.
I really think only fools and horses hang out there lately, the good sellers left, the good buyers left, and now they are left with the pond scum they so urgently and pruriently desired.
For a newb you sound pretty smart , not all the coins on Heratige are that exspensive some are under $15 it's also a good place to just look at coins another is http://www.vcoins.com/ . rzage
scottishmoney, have you been to ebay? I report bad items everyday to ebay, I'm a good buyer and seller, and I try hard to make my business. AND LET ME SAY THIS ON BEHALF OF ALL GOOD SELLERS AND BUYERS, we don't need another person bashing ebay, and ruining our business
A bit of an overstatement. There are definitely SOME good dealers on ebay. Maybe not the ones you want there to be, but that's another story. Thanks for the link. I'll keep it. But they're pretty poor on world coins, to say the least.
Hey thanks for the link he doesn't have pictures but seems reasonable on prices. I agree there are some good sellers/buyers on e-bay but e-bay just doesn't do enough to get rid of the bad sellers/buyers. I had a bad experienc (several years ago) and e-bay was useless to help me out as was paypal. I did get the item but felt slighted enough to close my account and never do business with ebay again. I am greatful that you are trying to help out but as a seller it's not your job to police e-bay they should be doing this. If you have time to find it then so should e-bay they need to hire someone. Yes they have thousands of items but electronics, coins/money, jewerly, and high dollar items need someone to keep and eye for counterfits. Ice
