Hope everyone is having a great holiday season. My wife bought these Justinian I coins for me this year for Christmas: At 36mm it does not fit in my current camera setup. Will adjust it later when the duck has been eaten. This is a type I don't think I had before. It is covered in cleaning scratches like someone took a small rake to it. Not noticeable in hand. 20 Nummi. 10 Nummi. It is the start of a Justinian I typeset for my Byzantine 7070 album. John
Nice prezzies, @Bing and everyone else. It's already the 26th where I am, so Happy Boxing Day! When I was a child, I'd always wondered why boxing matches were held on the second day of Christmas.
Nice additions all. I didn't get any coins for Christmas, but I didn't ask. Maybe next year. Just sitting down for an early dinner of Beef Bourguignon in a few minutes.
This French pattern came a bit before Christmas, but I'm counting it as my sole numismatic Christmas present, and I was pretty pleasantly astonished at the gift. It came from Josh Z., aka @kazuma78, who's been kind to me before. (I believe it is actually the third coin in my Eclectic Box collection which was a gift from him!) France: bronze essai (5-centimes pattern by Barre) of Louis Phillipe I, 1840 Obverse: LOUIS PHILIPPE I ROI DES FRANÇAIS, laureate bust left. "BARRE 1840" below truncation. Reverse: REFONTE DES MONNAIES DE CUIVRE / 5 / CENT. / ESSAI; denomination within wreath. Too bad the Stacks-Bowers images of it aren't the best. They were shot through the somewhat scuffy slab, as you can see. The toning on this thing is "bonkers", if I correctly remember the word Josh used. (Edit- no, wait- I think that was @CircCam who uses the term "bonkers". LOL. Well, anyhoo...)
Merry Christmas to all. Our Dickens is the muppet one - it was the kids favorite, and we still watch even though they are grown. Despite the fact it is full of puppets Michael Cain makes sure it has enough pathos to be among the best... SC
1951 Dickens "Scrooged" is the best in costuming and acting but plays it fast and loose with the story details. The BBC/FX 'augmentation' is interesting and recommended to those who are willing to have an R rated, 21st century Dickens.
Hey, John, cool Avatar! I have not seen a post of it... is this two coins struck together? Two coins adhered together? Or a molding seam? COOL.
Very nice Justinian I set. Precisely today I was reading about the events during that particular time period. I always enjoy reading about what was happening in the world when a particular coin was in circulation.
It is a side view of a new Alexander tetradrachm I got from John Anthony. I think you are seeing the shadow. John
Mmmm mmm Coineos.... Interestingly, a friend in Japan just told me that they sell Coin Cookies. Small chip-like bags of cookies, I guess like animal crackers, but in the shape of various Japanese coins from the 7th to 20th centuries. Very cool. SC
