This is my latest addition to my NGC Registry Set. The 1942-P is very difficult to locate in MS67 with rainbow toning. I found this beauty in a Sunday night auction. Not only does it have outstanding pastel yellow and powder blue toning, it is a 1942-P NGC MS67 5FS with an incredible strike. The best strike of the entire collection. Now before you guys say that the strike isn't that good and you think the 5FS designation was a gift, remember that my collection is all about the toning. I had to angle the coin in order to capture the pastel colors. Here is the Heritage photo which does a much better job of capturing the strike, but the colors are way off. My registry set is currently ranked 9th and I have only the monster left to obtain: the 1943/2-P. If I can ever find a rainbow toned 43/2-P in MS66 or MS67, my set will leapfrog to 2cnd or 3rd. Bressler has 1st place locked up forever unless he sells his coins. Here is a photo of the set with 11 down and 1 to go. Comments Welcome!
Amazing Lehigh. You and Leeg are the high grade toning specialist it seems. Maybe the L in your names means LOVE's toners. I am starting to question my blast white coins. I have some raw Morgans that I am tempted to put in an album. My higher grade morgans are graded (nothing to special there except a few PL and and 1885 S MS 63). I am starting to think I will look for toned coins more, but I don't see often.
Lehigh, Congrats on the nice purchase! All I can say is, that the Set is beautiful with awesome toners. Good luck! I hope you find the last one soon at a decent price! I will try to remember to keep an eye out for one that meets your requirements and let you know if I find one. Frank
That is a spectacular jeff! Probably the best strike I have seen for that year, when I get my 43/2 I will probably be just a couple below you!
I've got the 43/2-P in MS-65 but not toned. And no way was I even going to consider FS. The rest of my set is all FS but the grades on'y run -64 to -66. And since I'm not into toning most are "white". Very nice set. Hope you get the 43/2-P of your choice.
I must admit that set is gorgeous I must admit that set is gorgeous - I have only seen one set that would even come close and it did not have a 44-D like this set does!
Wow! That is a beautiful set, the toned coins are starting to pull me in, and those nickels are all awesome! Found this 43 2P on Teletrade, says it's toned, but I don't really see it, certainly not rainbowed from the pic: http://www.teletrade.com/coins/lot.asp?auction=2661&lot=1188&imagetype=j2 Fred
Well, as you know, the war nickel set is simply a subset of the much larger Jefferson Nickel Set. I am currently focused on the entire Jefferson set (1938-1964). Presently my set is ranked 16th in the NGC registry and is 40% complete, so I have quite a bit of work to do. I am not as stringent with the rainbow toning requirement in the full set because some issues are just ultra rare with rainbow toning. However, I am about 3 hours away from winning a monster addition to the set. Wish me luck!
