Does anyone know of any places to buy pre-1900 Morgan Dollars in XF-AU condition at a fair price?

Im trying to fill the dates I don’t have.

I don’t care about mint marks. I know some like the 1893 S cost a fortune but I don’t need the “S” I just need an 1893 of any mint mark.

    Thanks :)

Besides your LCS....try Ebay, but be careful.

Heritage Auctions is great....you will probably pay full-price...but you can find what you want and they're all gonna be graded. Should be able to find XF-AU stuff

It might be better if you posted this in the Buy/Sell/Trade forums. If you want to have it moved, just click on "Report" and ask the mods to move it.

Ebay is risky to buy raw coins like what you want but if you can find slabbed examples and get them.for a good price in auction then crack them out if you want a raw set or you can do heritage but like goldfinger said you will mostly be paying close to retail price for them.

I didn't realize he wanted raw coins...that's risky, for sure. Need to be a good grader of the coins in question AND be able to grade from photos, not with the coins in hand.

If he is looking for graded coins, it's alot easier -- and safer -- even if you pay more.

If you buy raw, make sure the seller is reputable and has a decent window for returns.

Ah yeah I never use Ebay for coins. It’s just too risky for me.

I’d rather pay 5-10% more to buy from a reputable source than EBay which is like the Wild West of coin dealing.

Yeah EBay is like the one site I refuse to buy coins on.

It’s just too risky so I was hoping maybe there were reputable dealers (like APMEX or JM Bullion) that sold Morgans for good prices.

I’m willing to try any website except EBay. It’s just too risky for me.

So far I’ve only bought from brick & mortar dealers, APMEX and JM Bullion. I know they are reputable and don’t sell fakes but I was hoping maybe others knew of cheaper sources with the same kind of reputation as APMEX & JM.

It really all depends on price.

I’m willing to pay $20-$30 extra for a graded coin but I’m not going to pay too much higher than that.

I figure even if I buy a raw coin from a reputable source (like APMEX) I could always send it in myself.

The problem though is APMEX is a bit on the expensive side.

Some of your local coin shops may have connections for what you are looking for.

Sadly I live in a very small farming town and the nearest coin shop is like 1-1.5 hours away. :(

I mostly buy graded there . I have bought a few raw from people with stellar reviews and good pics , but certified I have no issue with buying from there if the deal is good

Check Ebay, HA, Great Collections, maybe even Stacks Bowers (though they are more high-end).

I get being price-sensitive, but I personally am OK with paying an extra 10-20% -- at times !! -- and even more for the RIGHT coin. If I'm going to be keeping it for years or decades, then I amortize the extra cost over that time period and ask if it's worth it.

    Usually, it is. :p

We're all different with different financial means and different ways of valuing the same coins so I would never tell anybody what to do. But you can look at the rationale one person applies (like I outlined above) and see if it applies in some of your cases.

I would just say that sometimes you get what you pay for and it pays to pay a bit more.

These days even buying graded coins is risky. I’ve seen some really good counterfeits that were almost indistinguishable from PCGS & NGC slabs.

In fact there was a news article I saw about a guy who paid like $49,000 for a Flowing Hair Dollar only for PCGS to tell him that the slab was fake and the coin was counterfeit.

    Poor guy got ripped off.

Thanks I’ll definitely check out all of those except EBay since I just don’t trust people on there.

The headache and anxiety of potentially getting a fake isn’t worth the 5-10% I would save compared to a more reputable site.

Whatever works for you.....I think HA and GC are your best bets.

If a seller has a good rep on Ebay -- and there are lots of good sellers there, believe me -- you should be OK. If they have a return policy, that adds to the safety. PayPal/Ebay and sometimes the credit cards will issue refunds too.

If a seller will not accept returns, that is a major red flag.
