3 dimes, 2 quarters, and a cent in a coinstar.

 

Among so other detritus found a war nickel!

Looks like a normally worn war nickel. But hey, free silver!

 

Let me preface this by saying that I have been trying for years to get any of my nephews or nieces interested in coin collecting and until recently, I have had NO luck! But, it looks like things might be looking up. Over the summer my Niece asked if I could help to get her, now, 5 year old son started with coin collecting. He apparently enjoys picking through coins and picking out the ones he likes. So, for his birthday in June, I sent him a State Park Quarter book and $15 dollars worth of, mainly, state park quarters. She said he loves it.
Then, last night I get a text from my niece, in California, saying that she took her coin stash to the local CoinStar machine and as she was loading her coins in, she looked down and found this!!
She, of course asked me if it was worth anything, I told her about $4. She was thrilled!!
I think I've got her hooked!!!

That's awesome. I get more silver from CoinStar machines than anywhere else in circulation.

The one downside to your story is that your niece (depending on how much she dumped into the CS machine) likely paid more in fees than she recovered in that silver Washington quarter. She should count and roll her own coins.

 

Yep, you are probably right, but its that whole, "I need it taken care of now!" thing.
I would have just taken mine to my Credit Union and gotten them counted for free.

Nice score today. 3 dimes and a penny. 2 silver dimes. The 1955 is in great condition and the 1942 is my 4th CS Merc.

 

Nice! In my 1971 Red Book, the 1955-P is still a premium date. I think at this point it's submerged in the rising tide of melt, but I'd still rather find it than yet another 1964...

 

I thought the 55 was lower mintage. It looks nicer in hand and is AU minimum. Had to come from someone's collection. This has not been circulating for 65 years.
I see now it is the lowest mintage business strike Roosevelt. A keeper for sure.

I found this lone 63 quarter in the Coinstar at Kroger yesterday.

Oh I like that. SWEET

 

I went to the local grocery store Coin Star to dump some halves. The coins were still clinking around in there after the receipt was totaled .

I asked the nice lady working there for assistance, and she opened up the machine and pulled out the inside reject tray, and we found some halves in there, along with a pile of damaged coins, tokens, and an Ike, which she simply handed over to me!

 

She probably thought they were yours!

 

I told her they weren't mine, and there were a lot of other coins in there covered in dust, lint, pet hair, etc that I didn't feel right taking.

I accepted the Ike because I knew lots of questions have been asked about what Coin Star does with them, and seeing it in the internal reject tray answered that question for me!

 

Coin Star now takes 11.9% of the total of a deposit. I have seen coins for sale by Coin Star. They got smart.
