http://mintnewsblog.blogspot.com/2009/02/2008-mint-set-sold-out.html Hope you got one..(or more) grab one before they skyrocket: http://coins.shop.ebay.com/items/_W...ksid=m270.l1313&_odkw=2008+-proof&_osacat=526
great, they finally stopped selling a 2008 product. yay! the plethora of 2009's shall soon be upon us. aside from them being a mit set and all that. is there anything special or otherwise unusual about 2008 that would make it a better year to grab ... i feel like i am missing something....
lowest mintage since 1963 and they are satin not business strike. Basically there are only about 750,000 of them and most are in the hands of collectors not dealers. If your collection is complete (including satin coins) you will have to deal with this potentially costly fact.
Looks like mint and proof sets are turning in low mintages maybe due to the huge number of offerings from the mint.
I believe someone on this board said it best when he said something to the effect of "even a mintage of two is too high if only one person wants one." The lower mintage of mint sets is in direct response to reduced demand for such sets... meaning the market for them is saturated, or they would have minted more. Don't go expecting them to skyrocket in value anytime soon. The fact is, only collectors care about them, and not very many anymore, hence the reason they're not minting as many... And I've yet to meet anyone that can really tell the difference between a so-called "satin finish" and a coin that's just a good example of a business strike. What miniscule difference there is hardly justifies the price. I've never got why people cared about mint sets. Apparently, more and more people are beginning to agree with me.
The buy price may skyrocket, but try and sell one to a coin dealer. You will be very lucky to get what you paid . I stay away from proof and mint sets now. I'd rather invest the $30 in an older Lincoln , IHC or Merc., or something else.
