This is an NGC-graded 1881-S Morgan. The combination of coin and grade is a bit surprising to me, which is why I want to get some other opinions on it. http://homepage.mac.com/ebangeman/coins/1881-obv-2.jpg http://homepage.mac.com/ebangeman/coins/1881-obv-3.jpg http://homepage.mac.com/ebangeman/coins/1881-rev-1.jpg http://homepage.mac.com/ebangeman/coins/1881-rev-2.jpg
Looks about MS66 to me. The Rev looks PL but not the Obv, at least by the pics. If the Obv looks like the Rev, then I'll go with the PL designation also. Nice Morgan tho'.
Now understand we're grading 4 pics, Pal, not a coin in-hand. Here's the direct link to the '81-Ss on Heritage right now: http://coins.ha.com/common/search_r...s&Ntt=1881-s&Ne=304&N=51+793+794+791+1577+382. I'm also basing my grade on the few '81-Ss I have. I have to say, overall, yours can't do over a 64. Just going on what I can see in the 4 pics. It does seem to have squeaky-clean fields, though, and I like it a lot.
At 11:00 on the reverse, what is going on around that T? Is it raining? Otherwise, I can't see much wrong with it. Enough going on around the T at 11:00 on the reverse to keep it from 66 I would think. I would go MS-65.
The point I have tried to make on numerous occasions is that the Morgans from the S mint up to '83 are not graded like the coins from other mints. What would be a 65 or 66 from the P mint would only be a 64 or 63 if it was from the S mint. To be honest, I'm surprised they even gave this coin a 64.
Everybody keep your seats, I'll take this one. I have to say, you're one tricky guy. And, of course, so much for photo-grading...
Wow , NGC really blew that one . Must have been Monday morning after a hangover . With an old set of glasses . rzage
