A crazy year but a great hobby we could still enjoy at home in the midst of it. Let’s see one pickup that brought you some joy.
Well I couldn't afford to buy this year but I was blessed to win a contest coin, received coins for my Bday and got my Secret Santa . I'll just post a few .
I did get some US coins this year(Peace dollars, Kennedy and Benji halves), however they're nothing new. But I newly dabbled into ancients and here are my top 3 favourites! Nerva/Salus, the crown jewel of not only my collection of the Five Good Emperors, but also my Roman collection, I just love the centering, subtle toning, and the total wear. It's just simple, regal, and elegant. Chola 1/8 Kahavanu, Rajendra Chola (1014-1044), a copper Chola coin was my first ever ancient coin I got when I was 13, and ever since reviving my interest in general numismatics back in 2018, I wanted a gold coin from that kingdom. However they all cost so much for my budget, and when I saw this coin for around 100 bucks on Ma-shops, I swooped right in! This is a commemorative coin for conquering the neighboring kingdoms of Chera, and Pandya, depicted as the royal emblems of Cholan tiger, Pandyan twin fish, and the Cheran bow (off-center behind tiger), all under the single rule symbolized by the umbrella, and the legends in Nageri states, Yudha-malla, one who's strong in wars. My most recent purchase, Alexander III tetradrachm I got only for 60 bucks, which turned out to be a rare type!
I really don't think I could pick a single favorite, so here are just a few highlights from 2020. Switzerland (Basel): gold guilder (goldgulden) of Frederick III, Holy Roman Emperor, ca. 1452-1478 Spain: gold escudo of Charles IV, 1792-MF, Madrid mint United States: silver Draped Bust half dollar, 1806, "Pointed 6, stem through claw" variety United States: bronze proof Indian Head cent, 1881 United States: gold quarter-eagle ($2.50), Liberty Head type, 1907 Oh- just sealed the deal on this one yesterday:
2020 wasn't about quanty, but more so quality of varieties found.....for my collection. With one of the first scores of 2020 was an 1838 large star rusted reverse seated half dime. A very rare variety and cornor stone of my seated H-10 collection. The next specimen was something that sort of came to me by accident, as I wasn't actually hunting the coin or variety, so it more so found me than me it. 1818 Larger cent Next another very rare variety find...only 8 known to exist...1852/2 U.S. Silver Three cent piece... AKA" a fish scale" Even though the specimen is detailed do to damaged it still higest known grade of XF details....thats is an R-7 + rarity.
Another well worned Fish scale who's color and character won my eye appeal. Aother smaller but eye appealing specimen was this 1918 Canadian 5 cent silver...agIn its eye appeal helpped me pull the trigger. This 1943 Newfoundland dime not only a low mintage, but eye candy to boot. These were major additions to my varieties as well collection in general. I have also purchased some buffalo 2 feather varieties, to add to the herd.
My favorite tends to be my most recent purchase. I did just receive this one two days ago and I do believe it has everything right to be called my favorite 2020 acquisition.
And Randy do you realize that 5 out of the last 7 coins posted had the same sorce of origin? Meaning whom purchased from? ... Correct " Allegiance Rare coins" John Call is one of the10 best coin dealers in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States! His knowlege of this hobby, the quality of his inventory, as well customer service is First Class!
John is as first class of a guy as there is. I hope his Christmas is a very blessed one. He deserves it.
My favorite pickup in 1960, three years before I even had a license. The Ford F-100 three on the column was perfect for attending the occasional barn party in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C. (Photo borrowed from the internet)
I only bought three coins this year. Two were at the Fun show last January. The half came from CRO and the dime was from a good friend. The 3 cent came from ToughCoins.
I had been looking to upgrade this Low #1 Hard Times token for about 20 years, so this has to be my favorite pick-up for 2020. Second is this 1937 King George VI five pound coronation gold coin.
My favorite was purchased "pocket carried" from our very own @Chiefbullsit , and was the first Daniel Carr over strike I owned, which started me down this exonumia rabbit hole I find myself in. Z
I didn't buy as much as I did last year. However, if I had to pick, it would probably be this. Nerva AR Denarius 97 A.D. Obverse: IMP NERVA CAES AVG P M TR P II COS III P P, laureate head right Reverse: CONCORDIA EXERCITVVM, clasped hands. Diameter: 17mm Weight: 3.20g
I might as well do my favorite piece of paper money as well. It's ugly and worn, but it's a piece of local history for me. 1857 $5 Exchange Bank of Tennessee, Murfreesboro. Some other favorites: The only American coin that I acquired this year. I mostly bought ancients this year, so in actuality, I bought very few modern world coins. This Victorian Shilling is probably my favorite due to the attractive and even levels of wear.
