    Hey Coin Talker Folks,

I have been unable to make any real purchases in quite awhile due to the divorce, so I was ecstactic to be able to pick this coin up last night on eBay. Although I found, bought, sold and still own a gang of 1998-P and 2000-P "Wide AM" Cents as well as 1999-S "Close AM" Cents, this is my first 1999-P "Wide AM" Lincoln Cent. I bid much higher for it but got it for $101.01 with the shipping and Insurance and think it was a steal. Let me know what you think!!!

Congratulations. I don't know much about these varieties. I guess I'd better learn and keep an eye out.

Frank, i am happy for you! I know nothing about these modern pennies, and what varieties to look out for, but it seems you made quite a catch there. Is it really that scarce?
    Take care,
    Eduard

If this was in my change I wouldn't know what to do with it other than stick it in the penny jar.

Frank, give me a lesson on this variety !

    Frank, great buy.
Best of the three wide AMs, now you have one more to go, I think it is a 96 wide AM that has been found now. As a Lincoln collector, I know how hard a good 99 wide AM is to find at a good price. Great addition to your collection.

Nice addition Frank! Bummer you had to pay for it and couldn't find it in your change.

Thanks Eduard! That is a very welcomed pat on the back from a true Gentleman that has such beautiful and rare coins! Up until about two years ago, the 1999-P "Wide AM" Lincoln Cent was extremely scarce. However, since then, there has been quite a few specimens found and it's scarcity has dropped significantly. This is probably attributed to three things; 1) the large influx on new Collectors to the hobby, 2) increased interest in Varieties and Errors due to the values that even newer coins with one of these can bring and, 3) folks dumping loads and loads of hoarded (saved) coins just to make ends meet.

    Ruben,

I am not totally sure of all of the facts but if I make a wrong quote, hopefully someone will post a correction to the following! In 1998, 1999 and 2000, the Philidelphia Mint exhausted their' supply of Reverse Dies and apparently some Obverse Dies as well due to Die failures and could not meet their' production demands in those years. Therefore, they requested that the San Francisco return some Proof Reverse Dies and probably Obverse Dies as well, so that they could meet the production demands. Thus the 1998-P, 1999-P and 2000-P "Wide AM - Proof Reverse" Lincoln Cents were born! Now, due to this, the San Francisco Mint could not meet their' production demands in 1998 and 1999. They requested some Master Hub Dies from the Denver Mint in 1998 and either from the Denver Mint or Philidelphia Mint in 1999 which they used to complete their' production run. After the "D" Mintmark was removed, an "S" Mintmark was added to the Obverse Dies and the Obverse and Reverse Dies were highly polished to Proof specifications, the 1998-S "Close AM - Business Strike Reverse" Lincoln Cent was born. It has been reported that and some 1998-S Cents are said to bear the remnants of a "D" (ghost) Mintmark. The 1999-S "Close AM - Business Strike Reverse" Lincoln Cent was born in much the same way but I am not sure if it is clear whether the Dies came from Denver or Philly! It has long been theorized that 1996-S, 1997-S and 2000-S "Close AM" Cents and 1996-P and 1997-P "Wide AM" Cents may exist and now Billy Crawford has proved a portion of that theory when he found a 1996-P "Wide AM" Lincoln Cent last year. I have known about this new and very rare Variety since shortly after it's find by Mr. Crawford and was made aware of it by Ben. The news of it's find was significantly delayed to to Mr. Crawford suffering a heart attack. To make matters worse, Mr. Crawford was robbed of the coin as well as many other Variety and Error coins earlier this month after attending a Coin Show. Read the story at http://www.conecaonline.org .... I sure hope that they find the thieves very soon and are able to return the coins to Mr. Crawford. Luckily, the 1982-P Small Date Copper "DDR# 1" Lincoln Cent in MS-65 Red that he Cherrypicked recently, was not on the list of stolen coins. This Variety coin alone is worth probably no less than $4,000 and I would not be surprised if it goes over $10,000 if an when it ever goes up for auction!

Thanks everyone! I have ached to own one of these rare Variety Cents ever since I found my first 2000-P "Wide AM" Cent years ago. However, I could never afford one until now and was totally surprised at the final bid price that I got it for! To be honest, I bid $217.97 (that's all I could afford at the time) on the coin in the last 10 seconds of the Auction and trully believed that the price would go to over $300 for the coin. Don't spread this around but I nearly pooped in my pants when I saw that I had won it for less than half of what I bid!

Now that's Clinker material! What I want to know it what the difference is between a wide and close AM reverse (what to look for).

I had to glance over this thread quickly, today is my first day as a human after 3 weeks of pnuemonia and strep throat, I am soooooooooo behind. I am glad to see you catch a break.

I don't mess with the memorials much but do know this is a good one, and I hope you do well with it.

We are all like that! ;) I had one this weekend I got for less than half my snipe bid and I was tickled and the same last weekend, so those are ones we get to reflect back on as the rest of our snipe bids get out sniped. :D

    Congratulations on the pickup! :thumb:

    That's great, Frank. Congrats!!!

It's always fun to throw out a snipe bid in the last few seconds and win the auction for much less than your snipe bid, especially for a coin that you REALLY want.
