There is subset of the TPG Registry Sets that try for the lowest certified coins. I'm sure that coin will be headed to PCGS in the hopes of getting a PO-01. Although I can't prove it, I'm always suspicious that modern coins with that much wear may have had a little "help" to get there. I'm sure there may be the occasional pocket piece with a lot of wear, but with the ridiculous prices these are fetching, it seems there may be an opportunity for some monkey business Just my opinion
People try, but you can find slabs that will say artificially worn and are details graded. Someone may have found a way to help it some along the way but you can’t just grind them down or anything like that and get a straight grade.
Be prepared to be very patient. I've been carrying around an ASE as a pocket piece for five or six years, and it's barely down to VF yet.
I read a few years ago that you could P-01 from coins in a rock tumbler. Hard to imagine that as a pocket piece that the Kennedy would look like that. Half dollars don't even circulate anymore. I could be wrong.
I'm having a hard time getting a photo of mine with my poor old phone, but it's not nearly as worn as yours. I must be carrying the wrong other stuff in that pocket...
I have never understood the willingness of some to fork over astronomical sums for lowball sets; then again, where there's a buyer, there will be a seller!
Yeah, I figure any time you offer more for an item that's in poorer condition, there's a perverse incentive to beat up an existing example. I just wanted to see what an ASE would look like in AG condition. It looks like I'll need to try another tactic if I want to find out in my lifetime. (I toyed with the idea of finding an impaired Kennedy gold to do the same thing, but didn't have the guts.)
It's generally just for series that didn't really circulate much like kennedys, morgans, moderns, comparatives etc.
The only pocket pieces I have are called my car keys, a key ring and the change I'm going to spend goes in my left pants pocket. The change I receive and haven't checked goes into the right pocket.
Yes me too. But I'm laid off this winter. I could buy some junk ones and just pack them. Nothing to lose.
I do love that some of these lowball coin actually have CAC stickers, too. That Kennedy does see high priced, but I suppose the uniqueness is that it's only 56 years old and is that worn where they are plenty of Morgans that a P01, but some had 150 years to get that way.
I'm not sure I would say there are plenty of PO1 Morgans, theres currenty 665 from PCGS but almost 100 of those are from the 1921s. Most of them have under 10 with a few that are close to 20. A lot of dates are under 5 as well it's just a really long series that gives a high total number
