1981 D PENNY...

Ok guys... I am new at this, I'll give you that, but I see something very wrong with this coin. Am I right?

This coin should be copper, right?

It's not on a foreign planchet, or
copper-coated zinc planchet.

Weigh it, and it will weigh 3.1 grams +-
or 48 grains +-

There is no error on that coin, I'm sorry to say.

 

Ok... I am coin roll hunting and a few rolls after hunting the one that I got the penny above from, I just found another one!!! Plus, I noticed something else...

What are the odds of that happening?

 

If it is copper then why is it shining silver under the plating?

 

1981 Cents are not plated. Some kind of damage.
And/or chemical reaction.
It was probably plated post mint and it came off. There are science experiments that are done to plate Cents with Mercury and other silverlike metals.

 

Could be just odd toning due to environmental factors.
