Legislation seeking coinage to recognize the centennial anniversary in 2021 of the transition from the Morgan to the Peace dollar awaits President Trump’s signature. H.R. 6192, the 1921 Silver Dollar Coin Anniversary Act, was introduced in the House March 11, 2020, by Rep. Andy Barr, R-KY. H.R. 6192 was received by the Senate Sept. 23 and referred to the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs. The Senate passed the measure Dec. 17 by unanimous consent. A mirror bill in the Senate, S. 4326, was introduced July 27, 2020, by Sen. Mike Enzi, R-WY. The legislative initiative was championed by two longtime collectors, Thomas J. Uram, chairman of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, and Mike Moran, another member of the CCAC. H.R. 6192 authorizes production of Morgan and Peace dollars in not less than .900 fine silver, with the balance of the alloy in copper. Uram said that, in discussions with U.S. Mint officials, they indicated options would include issues struck at the Denver, Philadelphia and San Francisco Mints. Privy marks could be added to specific Morgan dollar issues to pay homage to the silver dollar output at the former Carson City Mint in Nevada and New Orleans Mint in Louisiana. Uram said discussions included details for Proof and Uncirculated releases, with the possibility for special sets to include coins of different finishes from multiple Mints.
Wish they would make beautiful NEW designs instead of rehashing old designs. Don't get me wrong, I love Peace Dollars. Morgans however But I would take a well designed coin over something already used.
Prepare to get in one of those Black Friday type events where the average collector has no chance to get one.
There are no artists around anymore who are skilled enough to design anything beautiful that works on a coin. The skill is lost to time.
There's plenty around and world coins show it all the time, the US mint even flashes it from time to time. The issue is more with the selection committees that determine which design gets used. If you look at the proposed designs for things there's often some very beautiful ones that are much better than what gets picked
The mint would be outright stupid not to make a lot of these. I'm not huge on the idea of CC privy marks but whatever. Best case scenario: The mint makes a lot of them They are minted in .900 silver The mint prices them fairly They are based on the 1878-1904 die hub (as opposed to the 1921) The peace dollar is high relief I have been hoping for a 2021 Morgan/peace set since I began collecting.
There will likely be one or two that anyone can easily get, if they do some special finishes or privy ones those will likely be the limited ones
I'd be shocked if any of them are under $80ish with the specials ones if they do them being $100ish. Now if for whatever reason they do a bullion one then yea that should be ASE bullion price
Once again you took the words right out of my mouth (or keyboard?). The mint has become akin to Disney in that the most popular products are remakes of the originals.
Sad but true. To me it cheapens the originals doing modern mass productions of them, ironically they can end up being more expensive than the originals as well.
And... Congress (116th session) has adjourned without the President signing the bill. It's dead, Jim. I'm a Doctor not a Mint Director. (EDIT) Any bets the mint goes ahead as a silver medal anyway -- and we're all going to be carping about the costs of a medal that's not a coin.
