I saw this one today and had to have it, and the price was good . I figured I should share this one with the forum. It's in a new NGC holder you can try to guess the grade, but it might be too tough. I just couldn't get the obv to come out right :headbang:, I'll try to take some more pics.
this coin has made me notice something that I never have before. Apparently the '82-S has several different varieties for the date. And it is strange because usually the date was punched into the die using a gang punch with all 4 digits. But this date and mint seems to have been done with a mixture of punches. Some 2 gang x 2 gang, some 3 gang x 1, and some 4 gang. This page on Heritage will illustrate what I mean if you look at all the coins. - Click Here Look at the 2 on this coin. it is not only smaller than the other digits, it is also raised a good bit higher. Here is another where the 2nd 8 and the 2 are both smaller and raised above the other digits to illustrate what I mean. As for the grade of your coin I'm gonna say 63.
Yeah that was one thing that stood out, I thought the 2 looked a little odd. I wonder why they don't differentiate between the differen't strikes?
It may be as simple as no one has noticed it yet. It's not in the Cherrypicker's, I don't have a VAM book - will have to check the web site.
Another interesting thing I found is when you hold the coin horizontally the 18 in the date is strongly struck, and the numbers are raised. The second is only slightly raised, and the 2 doesn't seem to be raised at all. It definitely interesting good eye GDJMSP.
