1943.................................. ......hello stella and welcome to the boards! i am curious, where have you heard of the doubled die 43 steelie? i haven't heard of this. steve
Welcome! Check out this web site it has all you need to know about Wheat & LMC cents www.coppercoins.com
The 1943 steel cent ddo is NOT the king of doubled dies. FYI that is reserved for the 1955/1972/1983 DDR or the 1969 S DDO.
Your acctually correct i would have said the 69-s, or a 58 DDO would be king, BUT PCGS has only confermed and graded 2 YES ONLY TWO. Now if there is only two, wouldnt this qualify as a king.
But the 1943 is the only STEEL DDO, and there are only two graded by pcgs.... I GOT ONE, let me know if you guys want a picture uploaded. Only twgo have been raded like i said, and one is MS64 the other MS65.... Plus Its not listed in any book.... hold up ill take a picture of it...
It is listed in the Cherrypicker's Guide as showing a mushy doubling in the date and LIBERTY and with a historical value of $50 in MS-65. There is also a similar 1943-S. Pesonally, I don't see how doubling only of the date and another element qualifies as a DDO, which implies that the entire obverse (O) has is doubled (D) on the die (D). Where does the information come from that only two of these exist? Cherrypicker's says it has always been very popular with Lincoln specialists, implying that there are at least several more.
So is this the other 1943 DDO? http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=25014&Lot_No=13035 BTW, if memory serves me correctly, there is only 1 certified 1958- DDO
This coin is listed in Cherrypicker's as having a rarity of URS-7. The prices listed are: XF-$95, AU-$150, MS-63 - $250. Doesn't seem like an ultra-rarity to me.
You're right - I stand corrected. My 5th edition Cherrypicker's shows VF-$5, EF-$10, AU-$20, MS60-$25, MS63-$35, MS65-$50
Okay. That makes more sense -- mine's 4th edition. They must have found a lot more of them. I'm betting it's not listed as a URS-7 anymore either.
As already noted go to www.coppercoins.com There you would find almost some type of Double Die for every year of that coin. Double Dies are sort of common but only the ones that make it into the Red Book or similar popular books makes the grade as expensive or valuable. All coins prices are basically dependant on who wants them, how many want them and those are based on how many have even heard about them. This is probably why the 1955 Double Die is so expensive. It is probably the most talked about, written about, discussed Double Die therefore demanding the highest amount of money. Note in the famous Red Book so few Double Dies are mentioned for the Lincoln Cents. On the Coppercoins web site there is considerable mentioning of RPM's. Note the Red Book doesn't mention them. In the Red Book on pages 401 to 404, 2009 edition, there is no mention of RPM's. Naturally this holds down their value. Then note how they not only show values of the 55 but have a little notation about just that coin. So now everyone wants one. If the Red Book mentions the 1943 Double Die it too will then become famous and worth much, much more.
