As most of you know, things have been a bit crazy in the FurryFrog household the last few weeks. FFIVN came down with appendicitis on the 4th and had surgery to remove it on the 5th. A few days later we received a message that something was coming for him in the mail. It arrived Wednesday and he opened it up on Thursday for Saturnalia. What came out was totally unexpected. A beautiful Athenian Tetradrachm! We've looked at them and admired the from afar but we never expected to have one. There was a card that came with it and it referenced having "test cuts". FFIVN thought it was really funny since he now has 3 "test cuts" from his surgery. Luckily, when he got is, it showed that he was solid through-and-through, just like this owl Since then, his owl has not left its place of honor on the nightstand next to his bed...except for one night when the Elves on the Shelf took it to study it I think we will get a nice invisible frame for it so that he can easily display it. We have been reading up on different Athenian tetradrachms and the style changes. I think we have the attribution correct but welcome any input if we are wrong. I've said it time and again, Everyone here on the Ancients forum, and on CT in general, are excellent people. A "cut above" if you will... (there's the pun). FFIVN and I have both learned so much from everyone here and we are grateful for everybody. 2020 has been a rough year for us, as well as a lot of people, but you all have made it much better by showing just how generous people can be. The world needs more people like those of you on CT. I will stop with the sap-fest now and get to the coin Attica, Athens AR Tetradrachm After 449-413 BC Obverse: Helmeted head of Athena right, in crested Attic helmet decorated with three olive leaves over visor and a spiral palmette on the bowl Reverse: AΘE, owl standing right, head facing; olive sprig and crescent behind, test cut between owl's eyes Here is FFIVN beaming while holding it The elves studying the coin: FFIVN and his sister being a "cut above" this morning doing a Cub Scout service project to donate food and toiletries to those in need in our community. Our goal was to get the boxes stacked higher than his sister. We didn't quite make it but we were close! 40 rolls of TP, 48 bottles of hand sanitizer, and a big box of food. The rest of the scouts in the pack collected a full truckload of food which will hopefully help those who are having a tough time this season. Covid certainly has made things much more difficult for so many people. Thank you all for reading and just being awesome! Io Saturnalia, Merry Christmas, Happy (belated)Hanukah, and Seasons Greetings! Take care of yourselves and others.
Beautiful thread. May the blessings of the season be with all of you this holiday and the coming New Year.
That settles it . I've already had a great Christmas. That brought much needed joy to my mind. Thank you for sharing that....martha
I’m glad that this is bringing joy to more than just my family. The spirit of giving is strong with CT. Since a lot of people are seeing this, I’m going to throw a request out there: If you can, please consider donating to your local food pantry. They normally get slammed this time of year, but with the pandemic, things are so much worse. Our local food pantry has seen an almost 50% increase in the number of people they are serving compared to last year at this time.
And those are just the two oldest...you have’t seen the littlest tadpole. He is only 15 months old but he already loves doing what this older siblings do, like looking at coins. Unfortunately, things still end up in his mouth from time to time so he is very restricted in what he can handle lol
@furryfrog02, thank you for posting this. What the doctor ordered. And Yeah, the coin is great, too. ...Redundant, but sincere.
