World Coin books?

Discussion in 'World Coins' started by CanadianCharles, Feb 20, 2009.

  1. I'm starting to organize all my world coins but I have no way of identifying them. I am looking to purchase sometype of book that has most countries of the world in it.

Is there is any books you guys would recommend, anything to stay away from?

I was looking at the 2009 Standard Catalog of World Coins, is that book any good?

    Thanks,
    Charles

Yup, the Krause 2009 Standard Catalog of World Coins is the way to go. It comes in several volumes; each lists all minted world coins of a particular century.
Additionally you can checkout World Coin Gallery

i agree with Kid :) the Krause publications are great. They are not 'THE' authority as alot of countries have books about their own coinage and would go into more details about their own coins, the krause books are the best place to get the most info about the most amount of coins and from the most countries.

I couldnt live without them for either world coins or currency :) They seem expensive to start with, but you really dont need to update each volumne each year. I try to update 1 or two volumes between the coins and currency a year if i can. The coins line has like 5 books and currency 3. I find the more important volumnes on the coins is the 2 volumnes that cover the most recent issues. But if you collect mainly older coins, you have the choice of getting the volumes that fit your own time periods.

  5. Thanks Daggarjon and Kidromeo.

They don't seem to be that expensive on amazon or ebay. For now I will probably just get the 1901- 2000, since I'm just getting into world coins.

Just curious, do these books list the values of the coins?

Yes sir they do. Although.. check shipping and handling. Because my 1901-2000 was 100$ at a shop. I saw on on ebay for something like 29.99 I imagine they would nail you on the shipping to make up the difference

  7. Nah.. not that bad, I was looking at one on eBay for $35 and shipping was only $6 or $7 and on amazon shipping is free on most things.

if the books are that cheap ... it is most likely an older version and the seller is looking to unload it fast. Buying an older version is easily the best way to get a volume in a more reasonable price range :)

Normally a volume a year or two old won't make much of a difference (I'm using 2007 Krause catalogs myself).

However, I remember reading somewhere that some coin dealers were getting a little upset that the values in the catalogs hadn't changed much over the past few years and didn't accurately reflect the market. I think the 2009 catalog values will be substantial in some areas.

  10. It seems to be the 2009 catalog, everywhere I go the covers seem to be the same.

That's fine by me, I just wanted an estimate on their values. I wasn't planning on buying or selling anytime soon, but if I was do you know of any good sites for world coin prices?

eBay and Heritage. Just do a search of completed auctions to get an accurate value of a particular coin (grade and attributes may vary of course).
