Picked this one yesterday from a local dealer. 1908 Indian head cent, Snow-1 (RPD, 9 both north and south).
That's a nice find. I need to get the rest of Rick Snow's attribution guide books so I can cherrypick some like that.
Thanks for looking everyone! No, I cherrypicked this one. The dealer I got it from has been a fairly productive source for unmarked IHC varieties.
For all IHC RPD's from 1900-1909 I use Snow's attribution guide (Vol 6), its the best. It does have some of the better misplaced dates, but if you really want to attribute MPD's its best to have K. Flynn and L. Steve's 'Flying Eagle and Indian Head Cent Varieties' or Flynn's 'Two dates are better than one'.
Acanthite; Your finding is nice; but are you sure, in your coin it's nothing else? check up this areas most close, and tell me if you see something else in there.
I see some minor scratches and gouges in those areas, clearly indented in the fields. What do you see, Carlos?
A lot of symbols from other coins, all over the oberse and reverse. Monday I'll try to identify some of them. And I'm happy because is not my coin. congratulations.
I think you'll find that many random scatches and other such damage to a coin can appear to be letters or images. It takes practice to differentiate, particuarily when you do not have material to look at in hand. I know you like to search for errors and varieties, it would be informative for you to go and look at in hand, or buy, some attributed error/variety cents and get a feel for what to look for, especially clashed dies and doubled dies.
I can only find Snow's attribution guides Vol. 1, 2, and 3 ... nothing after. Do you have any suggested sources?
I bought mine off a dealer who had an extra copy, but I just looked at Richard Snow's site and saw this possibility (scroll to end): http://www.indiancent.com/book.php though he's only selling it attached to three other volumes. I don't know what is the plan right now about a new volume 4 covering 1891-1909, it was supposed to be released last year.
Great! Thanks a lot. I think I might just wait it out for Vol. 4. I didn't know about that website. Thanks again.
