I see this Odd Fellow token , what you all think? they say there still is some luster , its bright but looks almost uncirculated.
Higgins also made the "Primitive" tokens featuring the US Monitor. John Milton has a really nice one, mine looks like something scraped off the sole of my shoe!
I am having some trouble with the site I use to attribute CWT's. So I can only reference the obv die. LC13 Higgins liberty cap die 9 Reverse is a Scovill's
That entire token was made by the Scovill Company. Scovill designed that liberty head and Henry Higgins copied it probably by pressing the Scovill token into soft steal. Here are the two varieties side by side. The Higgins copy, #9, is on the left and the Scovill piece, #10, is on the right. The Higgins copy always loses some detail. My token is especially weak because of the loss of detail and the fact that it's circulated down to a VF. Here are both sides of the Higgins token, 9 / 431 a. The reverse of this piece was struck from one of Henry Higgins' own dies. It's an example of an Indiana Primitive.
I had thought I originally attributed it as a Scoville. Higgins must have copied it before the dies rusted?
There is no chance that Higgins had access to the Scoville dies. He used a Scoville token to make his dies.
People have speculated that Higgins had access to a Higley copper which gave him the idea to use the “value me as you pleas(e)” phrase.
I'm not a dedicated collector of CW Tokens, but will pick one up when I come across them at swap meets, etc. Here's 2 Patriotic I've purchased and 1 Store Card I found metal detecting.
