Nations in K&M That is a good question. I count about 250 nations but there are about another 250 nations under those major listings (in the 20th Century volume). So, for example, there is a major listing for Malaysia and under that, there are listings for Kelantan, Trengganu, Straits Settlements, Sarawak, British North Borneo, Malaya and Malaya & British Borneo. So, counting only the major listings (in this example, only Malaysia), I have 175 countries. But if you count every listing (since I also have Straits Settlements, Sarawak, Malaya and Malaya & British Borneo) I have 288 of the 500. -Daniel
Well, let's say, half that many. Again, it all depends on how you look at it. Time for another example: If you count German Empire, Weimar Republic, Nazi German, Federal Republic, Democratic Republic and Saarland as 6 countries, then it is 500. But if you count them all as "Germany", then it is more like 250. Keep in mind - China alone has 57 entries not including the Japan-China Puppet States (5 more entries), China People's Republic (9 more), Republic of China (Taiwan) and the Foreign Enclaves. So I count all of those as 5, hence the 250 countries. I hope I did not make it even more complicated. -Daniel
So far: 118 Countries, 119 if you count USA 1060 different World Coins 15 different uncirculated Euro sets Goal is 200 different countries and add Vatican and San Morino to Euros Lots of duplicats, about 70-80 countries
With all these coins from so many countries, how do you store/catalouge all of them? -I have a ton of world coins but I have no way to know what I have or what to do with them.
That is a problem that I have faced as well. I can't store them each in flips - there are just too many. It would take up too much space. Most of my coins are rather common and in VG+ to XF condition, so I keep those in coin envelopes or slide boxes (little plastic 2" cubes) by country and try not to move them around too much. Of course the better grade ones and the rarer ones are in flips. I keep track of them in various Word files and Excel spreadsheets. I can't think of a simpler method to do it. Software does not seem to lend itself to large collections, although I do play around with some programs for my US coins and my ancients. -Daniel
Those are some great suggestions, I think I might try those coin envelope things, they look like they help. The only question I have is, if you had say.. 20 coins from 1 country and your not very familiar with that country's coins, how do you label the coins for later reference?
i only have about 140-150 countries... i will know more exactly once i get the rest of the 'bunch' sorted
I recently spent several evenings and many hours putting most of my world coins in 2X2's and sorting them by continent and country. And I didn't even take the time to catalogue them. I just organized them and wrote down each country that I have coins from.
I'm in the process of doing the same thing, AdamL. Right now they are sorted into countries and continents but I really like the images on many of the coins and may even put some of them together; ie. birds together, animals together, plants together etc.. I don't have duplicates of them all so it's going to be something I'm going to have to decide. I can't see myself expanding on every country I have so it wouldn't be that big a deal if there were similar images together even though they were from different countries.
I have to say, it takes me hours as well. I just got 42 coins today and I worked on them for about 3 hours and I am not done yet - I probably have at least another hour or so to go. I save the country, KM reference number, denomination, year, years minted, grade, value, size, metal, who I bought it from, the date of purchase and the price I paid as well as any notes. That is just in one file. I update a number of files to fully keep track of everything (like my swap list, my wish list, etc.). It takes time. If I had software that has the coin information in it (like KM number, years minted, country, denomination, metal, etc.) where I would just put in the other stuff (like the price I paid & the condition), that would save a lot of time. -Daniel
in 2 x 2's I have around 10,000 foreign coins and they are all in 2 x 2's. Then inserted in vynal pages then in 3 inch ring binders. Some countries fill up a binder by themselves-thats 600 coins. Some binders have three letters of the alphabet in them. All opf them are in the 2 x 2's and only about half are in the binders so far. Need to get more vynal pages. When this is done I plan on putting each binder on my computer. This is about three years work so far. Love this hobby. Olmanjon
877 coins, 791 types and 188 different countries. i also keep mine in 2x2' and in pages in 3 ring binders. i have binders for silver and base metals, and 1 for gold with only 3 coins in it.
