What caused this on my Lincoln cent? (x2)

I've got two pennies here that I've been meaning to ask about...

Forgive me if they're silly questions, but...
    A) On the Memorial cent, what would cause the column directly right of center to be bowed near the top? I've searched for an answer to that.. to no avail...

    B) On the Wheat, what caused the small bump? CUD? Break? Crack? Chip? (you can see I did research on that... I don't know if it helped or hurt..)

I realize that they're not the best pics, but any insight is appreciated..

Can't help with #1 but #2 is a die chip.

Maybe the part of the die that makes that coulumn broke off on the edge? Is it bowed or thicker? I agree with ziggy on #2

I will be the odd ball. It looks like a piece of weld/brazing spatter to me. i.e. post mint.

that is a very common place for die chips on wheaties. I have seen dozens over many years.

You might well be right, but that is not what I think I am seeing. That shape does not look like any chip I have seen. It is too perfectly oval and flat on top to be a random chip. His pic is not sharp enough for me to tell for sure, but it even looks like the sides are bulging out. If that is the case, no die chip could possibly have done that.

As for #2, the wheat is a 1953 and is a nice chocolate brown.. all except for that blemish, which is still reddish brown. I realize that the pic doesn't show that.
I don't know if that helps at all with the analysis.

For #1.. it's just a bowed column. I don't perceive it as "thicker," if that means raised higher than the rest of the column's surface. I could be wrong, as I only have a 7X loupe to view it with.

    No, I meant wider.

Also for #1, the column is perfectly straight on the right side... but, curves inward toward Lincoln on the left, with the detail line in the column curving with the bow. So, in that aspect, it is thicker at the top.

    Yes, it is definitely wider.
