One of the things that jumps out at me when looking at a coin, is the artestry value of the coin. I can't stop looking at my complete collection of my state quarters, and in doing so I thought it would be interesting to hear from people pertaining to what coins do they feel really seems to showcase the ability of the engraver/artist. For me i can't help but feel... Connecticut, because the detail of the tree seems very labour intensive. South Dakota, because all of the faces of the presidents on Mt. Rushmore are legible and can be easily recognized, and the coin really shows distance and 3-D. I'm wonder if there ever was a competition survey conducted in order to determine what coin design was everyones favorite.(Hopefully people could vote without preference to their home state). I won't comment specifically on which one lacks creativity, but I will say DICK CHENY as a hint.
Personally, I really like the Arizona design. I agree that the Conneticut one would have taken awhile to design.
I'm going to say the coin that makes me want to visit that state. That would be Maine. It's not the most elaborate, but then again it's not too busy either.
I use to live in Prince Edward Island (east coast of Canada), and i have been down to maine before. Wonderful place. Thats one thing I noticed about the state quarters. None of the coins from the States along the east coast, (or even those along the Gulf) feature the lobster,fishing or shrimping heritage industry. Even the states along the Chesepeake never captured it as well. I wonder if it has to do that the industry has collasped. (it certainly has in Canada)
Well it won't be my beloved home, Well it won't be my beloved home sweet home Tennessee - out of all the things this state could have been commemorated, well it was bad, very bad and we were not pleased. My favorite is the first 2 Del. and Penn. I don't think they are great design-es but they remind me of the start of the program and they are fairly simple also - I like that. Others that I liked was Miss. New Jersey, Conn. all the first year I guess - I think they were all good. Worst by far was Wyo. Indiana, Mich. North Carolina, well I could go on and oh yes and TN. - one of the worst.
My favorite is Wyoming. I love the bucking bronco motiff and on a nice mirrored proof field that really pops.
Probably not the reason. I'm sure that people living different states would say they had a better idea for those coins. So many states are famous or used to be famous for things different than what is on those coins. For example Illinois used to be the stock yard capital of the USA. I would think the Mint would want to start that series over and use completely different reverses.
Alaska was King of the State Quarters in a recent CT poll, I like that one. Wyoming took the 'worst of' in the State Quarters category. I like looking at the Silver Proofs, I've collected each set to hand down to the next generation in my household. Let's not forget that the 'Old Man's Face' fell off of the New Hampshire mountain featured on that state quarter.
Prince Edward Island had a pretty good state quarter. It's from 1992, I believe and was part of the insperation for the US program.
Yes -- we residents of Wyo. were very disappointed in the plain coin when we could have had more of the Tetons, or maybe Devils Tower in the background of the Wyo. bucking horse and cowboy. It is lots nicer to see the states which had 2 or 3 scenes depicting their state. I guess they just want to be sure no one infringes on that bucking horse insignia, so that it is only the state who shall use it. Copyright protected maybe ? I have to admit, I like the colorized versions too ........like little miniature portraits !
My favorite is South Dakota in both Proof and MS. The coin I like the least is the Wyoming in MS but proof is a little better. I also like the detail of New Jersey, Kentucky, Alaska and Nevada.
Maybe the mint will do you justice with their next series "National Monuments". But I for one will NOT be collecting that series, Just too many products and it cheapens the State Quarter series IMO.
