Already slabbed but the colors look kinda suspicious to me. I guess it they could be legit but the colors are ones we typically see on AT. What do yall think of the coin NT or AT? https://www.ebay.com/itm/1923-Peace-Dollar-PCGS-MS64-Monster-Toned-Raining-Toning/293886401605?hash=item446cfe9c45:g:eMIAAOSwSadf0PgE
Pastel tones are often found on peace dollars. The Peace dollar does not tone the same as what you would find on a Morgan
The colour do look strange to me. the Colour desigation is a strange one and from what I have seen not consistent(it is the most subjective details category after all). That it in a slab with a straight grade right now so no risk unless you crack out for an upgrade
Golly, wouldn't it be great if PCGS's cert verification gave you at least a thumbnail image of the actual coin, so you could see whether it was those colors when it went into the slab? I haven't looked at many heavily-toned Peace dollars, so I won't venture an opinion, I guess.
I'm a little surprised that one passed. I certainly wouldn't have paid much over 20 dollars if I had found it raw.
Wow. The lengths people go for a very common date coin because of toning. Which is far from dramatic. Not this guy.
Coins from certain series typically follow certain color schemes. An atypical color scheme deserves a higher level of scrutiny in regards to the originality of the toning. An atypical color scheme on a Peace Dollar is almost certain to be artificial and should be treated as questionable toning. David Hall’s statement that all rainbow toned Peace Dollars are AT was hyperbolic but he was referring to coins just like this one. You asked me what if I had seen 3 or 10, my answer would be a question, over what time period? If I had seen this color scheme sporadically over years of searching toned Peace Dollars, the color scheme would no longer be atypical. If I found 3 or 10 of these all in a short time period, that would bolster the feeling that they were AT. My disclaimer is that these photos are really bad and the coin might not look anything like what we are seeing. That said, if this coin is blanketed in bright green and pink, the toning is invariably questionable.
If the TPG didn't find it odd , then why question it? Are you concerned with it being counterfeit? Look up the TPG number. They often have photos attached. If you like it at that price then get it and be thankful for your good fortune.
Because blindly accepting the opinion of a TPG is what the kool-aid drinkers do. The fact that PCGS straight graded this toned Peace Dollar has given it a measure of "market acceptability" that it doesn't deserve IMO. So while the toning on this coin has passed muster at PCGS, it hasn't met my personal standards, therefore I would never buy this coin at anything above spot silver. To me, this is a details grade common date Peace Dollar.
@Lehigh96 Once again thanks for the informational comments. I am learning lots from what you provide. @-jeffB what do you mean by gassed? First I hear of such thing
Ditto. Maybe it was "assisted" in the toning, but if it was good enough for PCGS, I reckon it would be acceptable enough for me, in this particular case. I kind of like it. Of course I suppose there is always the possibility that it was "gassed" somehow and toned after it was put in the slab, but if so, that was a talented coin doctor indeed, to have been able to pull off those relatively evenly-distributed, subtle, pastel-toned areas, without undue blotchy patches or a less attractive result. I voted "NT" in the poll, just as an admittedly wild guess. That turned out to be a tiebreaker- the poll is now 6 to 5 in favor of NT, as of this posting. Of course I don't really know for sure. It's hard to say.
