Why are toned coins so popular?

Both of these grade equally (66). The top is a wonderful example of a blast white, whereas the bottom is an eye-popping toner (especially in-hand).

Both are beautiful in their own right, but IMO, the toned coin has something extra, a personality? a flair? I dunno what you want to call it, but it has it, and it makes it more unique then the blast white coin. All things being equal, (and ironically, the price I paid for each were within $1), I'll take the toned one over the blast white.

It's sort of like looking at art on a black & white TV for years, and then Mom and Dad splurge and get a Technicolor TV! :hungry:

Yes, and in spite of the efforts of some :cigar: to have us ignore :muted: them, they lower the eye appeal and :greedy: especially of Franklins, Peace dollars, and Washington quarters.

Thank goodness coins in these series exist without them. :)

That’s like complaining that a model has freckles, the coin is stunning!

But some see freckles while others see acne. I've never liked these spots but understand those who see past them.

I find them very distracting on untoned Franklins but they manifest more like toning breaks on coins like this.

You are welcome to prefer whatever you wish. I love a woman with freckles on her shoulders and across her nose.
I DON'T LIKE SPOTTED COINS AT ALL - EVEN IF THEY CAME FROM THE MINT WITH THEM. I don't grade them high either but I know others do.

A few spots and a little color just make things interesting. Of course, I have no idea how this coin got the way it is, but I do enjoy it for being what it is. :joyful::joyful:

I remember this old thread. Here is a coin I got into a bidding war over on Ebay. I had to have it no matter what the cost was going to be. I ended up paying $50 dollars more for it and never ever regretted it...

This coin is 1 of my favorite toned coins.

Here is another toned coin I bought off Ebay that I want to get slabbed either PCGS or NGC... I love this kind of toning.

It’s a fad thing like the 1950-d nickel

In reality toned are tarnished coins which will get worse over time. Don’t overpay -they are lousy investment.

Many big gun dealers buried in them. One his coin business folded (could not compete w eBay sellers) now works at auction house.

No they really aren’t that pooular - most want brilliant white coins with super luster not blemished tarnished slow movers.

Do you really think toning premiums for beautifully toned coins are new?

This post is chock full of false statements.

    1) Toned coins don't continue to tone once they are removed from their toning source.
    2) As someone who buys and sells coins regularly, toned coins and coins with exceptional eye appeal are always the easiest to sell and routinely bring big premiums.
    3) If people really wanted bright white coins (which are often dipped), then why do the generic white coins sell for price guide while rainbow toned coins sell for huge premiums?

Any dealer that is buried in NT coins and can't make a living,
has his head up his backside and shouldn't be a dealer in the first place.

This is a vey silly thread. It is criticism of the taste of seasoned collectors. Why do people like Blue cars? Because they do. Why do people like impressionist art? Because, it appeals to their aesthetic. Why do people like a kind of music? Because it appeals to them. Rather sophisticated collectors are paying lots of money for coins they find beautiful.

Message to the OP: You don’t like toned coins, so don’t buy them. Very simple.

I always find it amusing when someone disses people for what they collect. It would be a boring world if everyone collected the same things. I'm sure there are booger collectors out there somewhere.
