Just came across this and needed to verify if it is tge S/Horiz. Due to mint marks hand punched would position be off a bit? The example I looked at is placed lower and tail end of S can be seen clearly where this one is running into the lower leaf. Thanks again.
I'm not so sure. The anomaly to the right is much wider than the top or bottom, and it doesn't appear to have the bulbous end.
Yeah, was wondering if there is a site that shows multiple examples. At a certain angle it appears to be the S/D and has me scratching my head. Guess I should send it in and have one of the NGC verify and also grade while at it. Thanks cpm9ball
From my perspective, considering the proximity to the leaf, this may be another iteration of RPM. Notice the bump to the right of the "S". There is no listing for this coin in Wexler's or Variety Vista. I would like to see clear magnified photos, if possible.
Sorry about the lint bunny. I took pic from all four angles to hopefully show why I'm so confused. If you need more pkease ask and I will be happy to take more.
1 each of light source from north, east and south and steady the camera as best you can. Please do not get your hopes up.
Lol...best I can do until son gets home. I have severe arthritis in both hands and would need his help if better pics are needed. They are in order of North, Est and South I believe. Reflection shows it that way. No hopes to dash, just trying to figure out what this is...and thank you btw.
@Bargainbidder @Robert Ransom I used the magnifier app (up to x5) which comes as standard with Windows 10 to enlarge the area then took a photo. It looks like the MM took a hit
Thanks for the photos. Without the coin in-hand, I can only view your pics. and make a somewhat educated guess. A couple of photos depict what I think is a leaf clip due to the proximity of the punch head used to impress the MM. I also believe there was a weak first strike slightly to the east and north then the final strike which clipped the leaf and generated the impression on your coin. If you look closely at a couple of your photos, you can see what appears to be a small raised area to the east of the bulb of the "S" and also a disturbed area north of the MM. So, If I were able to observe the conditions I have related, I would send the coin to Wexler's for corroboration as a variety, but that is me and I am not suggesting you do this. Either way, good luck and maybe there are other CT'ers who agree with my position, maybe not.
That is so kool...thanks so much. I knew with every angle it wasn't the horizontal even though I've had coin put away since 1980 and only reason I know is it came out of storage container marked with that date...lol Since it might be a distinct variety I will send it in so others that have put coins away for 40 years like myself and come across one such as this, they will have a reference. Once again thank you for your time, patients and information.
For about $10 + postage I would be inclined to agree, just to satisfy my curiosity. However, just as an aside, I also am a little concerned as the raised curve NE of the centre bulb is so high I would expect to see more of the "first strike" above the MM
Steady hands would be needed for this job. Maybe he caught a case of the 'yips. That's what we called it when painting and an inadvertent muscle twitch and hit the white ceiling with colored paintbrush. I hated when that happened to me or my men. Wasted $$$$$$ would flood my mind.
I am really curious about your coin. Contact me PM if you send the coin to Wexler's and if it is returned not a new RPM Variety, I will reimburse you the cost.
After cpm9ball's first post I thought it was diagnosed. Anyway I agree it doesn't look like the one. The left side of the suspect mm doesn't extend far enough for me and the right side looks more like a stain or chip. Since you are a member here now, you can send it in to ICG and maybe insider will take a look and all they charge us is $10 with your forum name + Postage. Jim
