Hey everyone! I just got this in today, and wanted all of your grades/opinions on it Although it has some nicks/scratches here and there, its luster is absolutely amazing! I was hoping for it to reach at least an AU grade, so maybe some of you can help me decide on that. Thank you! :hammer:
Sorry Ryan, but those pictures make the obverse look harshly cleaned with all those hairlines. The reverse looks better, but you still see it. I could possibly say AU details. I hope it is just the picture.
In person, you can barely see a single hairline. Maybe I shouldn't take the picture with the coin directly under the lamp next time Toad has gotten me so use to Copper coins, I rarely worry about hairlines!
I agree with Mark. The coin has very nice details but it looks like it has been cleaned, The obv much worse than the rev. -Mike
I'm sure they are not as obvious in person, as I have the same issue with photographing my coins. However, I agree that it is likely cleaned. What would be more important to me in a case with an AU details coin like this is, how much luster remains? Is there sufficient cartwheel action going on? If so, can you retake the photos in a way that captures it? Also, what is that mark above liberty's head?
Unfortunately I agree with most cleaned. I would give it AU on details but drop to XF. But more importantly, it's a keeper. and if you don't want it, give me a call

It has very nice details, but looks a bit bright from cleaning. I can still see hairlines, although not as pronounced as in the other photos. What's important is that YOU like it in your collection.
Ryan what you are seeing is not luster, it is merely reflected light due to all the fine scratches. This coin has little if any luster at all. Now I'm not saying this to knock your coin, I'm saying it to help you learn how to tell the difference between mint luster and false luster. Shine is not the same thing as luster. The easiest way by far is to show you a coin with mint luster side by side with a coin like this in hand. But since I can't do that I would suggest that you take this coin to a coin show sometime and do it yourself. Show your coin to a dealer and ask to see one of a similar date that has luster. Once you actually see the difference in person you wil lknow how to tell the difference in the future.
I will try and do that with the Spring Coin Show coming up. But I think that the coin has at least "some" luster, it's just my camera will not pick up it's true color. But I do see where you are coming from, and I know what you mean. But I am comparing it's color to other PCGS and NGC coins I have, and I am kind of seeing what you are talking about. But just to be sure, I will take your advice, and bring it to the professional's
The majority of the coin looks cleaned. However, there appears to be a "color change" around the stars and lettering and other protected areas that could indicate some remaining luster. I have an AU cleaned seated half, that has similar details, yet cleaned; but there is still some remaining luster in protected areas. Actually quite a bit on the reverse.
Wow! Nice coin you got there I see what you're talking about, and I agree. My pictures just really do not show justice, but even though there is some "false" luster, such as Doug mentioned, there are still some spots with remaining "true and original" luster left. I need to learn how to take pics of silver coins!
